Cards in the news: Yasiel Puig (RC)

Bleacher Report

A Yasiel Puig 2013 Bowman Chrome Superfractor rookie card that is potentially worth more than $25,000 can be yours if you're lucky enough to select the right "Super Box."

Per Beckett, the card from Topps was pulled by a collector in Texas and was purchased by South Bay Baseball Cards to be included in one of its Super Boxes—a high-end repackage of cards and memorabilia, which is part of a 2013 Rookies and Phenoms 5 set that's on sale for $849.

The card received 13 offers offers on eBay at a $25,000 price before it was sold offline to the California-based company for the repackage.

I don't think that eBay will be pleased with how this sale went down.

This card was bought by the card shop that I frequent. I know the owners pretty well.

This card is the big card to get out of their Super Boxes now. Their "Super Boxes" are essentially built by them and professionally packaged. They aren't all that cheap, ranging from 75.00 and up for a box, with cases costing up to 500.00+. One box has the redemption usually for the bit "hit". A few times ago they did a '52 Topps Mantle. Recently there was a '52 Bowman Mantle as well. They also do different boxes for different sports. I think a Jordan 9.5 was done recently too.

A few months ago one Saturday, when they were doing the 1952 Mantle (it was a PSA 3) chase via Super Box, I saw one guy rip through like 4K worth of Super Box cases. Didn't even come close to the return on that. Needless to say, he didn't hit the redemption. Turns out, someone had bought the box about a week ago that had the redemption but did not open his box yet until after said Saturday.

At the time, I was picking through some of their 1975 stars and commons that they recently bought in a collection. I'm still in the process of grading the centered ones that I picked up and the ones that I have graded were 9s (including a Fisk). I spent 200.00 picking through raw commons and stars that day while watching that guy. I actually ended up buying one box for 100.00 and got a Trout /50 Auto (it was a Tier 1 product, though). I actually did ok with that.

My guess is the rest of the product sits on the shelf, or they break those and disperse the product fillers in subsequent super box offerings.

This seems to be the case for the 1952 Bowman Mantle. I went last week to the shop and there were still boxes on the shelf for that though it was pulled already. I don't think those will move.

I think this can be profitable for them (I believe they bought the Puig for 12.5K), however, if someone does pull the card early, what happens with the rest of the boxes is a valid question. I had suspicions that they knew which box the 1952 Topps Mantle was in when they were doing it and maybe just didn't put it out until they comfortably sold x amount of cases/boxes. That "seems" to have not been the case with the 1952 Bowman Mantle, as that one seems to have been pulled early enough to have many boxes still sitting.
