I received this interesting little item yesterday from Canada:

image

Obverse:
MIRACLE SYSTEM LUCKY PIECE
GUARANTEED TURF PROFITS
EASY FOR PLAYER - HARD FOR LAYER
Horseshoe, man on horse

Reverse:
M.P. WALTER & CO.
THE ACTUAL "HOW"
P.O. BOX 40A TOWSON, MD. (Maryland)
CORRESPONDENCE INVITED.
INQUIRE TODAY - AND MAKE
YOUR BOOKIE OBEY.

Metal: Aluminum
Size: 32mm
Weight: 2.21gm

It must be pretty old judging from the slang like "bookie" and "layer".

I think that I will go out to the track.

Nice piece. The term layer might be derived from England. This could still be a current word in England, that we don't hear in the US, much like the English word 'punter' which means bettor. The word bookie is currently still used here in the US. Usually abbreviated to "book". Even if you were to go to a large sportsbook casino in Vegas to make a bet, you would say, "I'm going to the MGM book".

Mr. Walter wrote a book about his system in 1930:

Title: The $5,000 Challenge System: World's Greatest Turf Investment Method
    Author: M.P. Walter & Company
    Publisher: M.P. Walter & Company, 1930
    Length: 30 pages

I was thinking that it looked like the 1920's-1930's based on the lettering.
