Chicks Dig The Long Ball

Who says Payton and Eli were the first sports duo to have comedic roles in commercials?

Chicks Dig The Long Ball

Brings up a good point, which pitchers were the best homerun hitters? I remember seeing one of their fellow Braves teammate, Mike Hampton, go yard quite a few times.

There was a pitcher in the 80's, I think his name was Don Robinson and his nickname was "Caveman". I remember him pitching for my Giants in the late 80's and I think he was a pretty prolific hitter as a pitcher. He is before my time but if I'm not mistaken Don Drysdale could hit. Of course going way back, there was a pitcher for the Red Sox that hit a few home runs before retiring.

For current pitchers I think Carlos Zambrano has had a lot of homers.

I loved that commercial with Maddux and Glavine. Maddux was my favorite pitcher growing up. Underrated to this day.

    Great commercial! Lol

The Phillies guy you refer to might be Rick Wise, another good hitter, occasional pinch hitter. He threw a no-hitter and hit two HRs in the game. Talk about doing it yourself...

Here's the all-time pitcher HR list. Wes Ferrell once hit 9 HR in a season...

I think that Ruth guy could hit a few dingers. image

Ken Brett wasn't too bad. I wonder what that list would look like as HR/AB?

Was surprised that a current player, Zambrano, had so many.

Wasn't Valenzuela a good hitter also?

That commercial, while great, always struck me as the pinnacle of the steroid era and the image I always have when I think of roids.

Despite his physique, Fernando was a pretty good athlete, but as a hitter he had an "all or nothing" swing. Let's just say he never got cheated at the plate.
  • Orel Hershiser out hit the a's in one world series game he pitched. 1988. And out pitched

Thanks for the confirmation. I remember him actually being used as a pinch hitter for the Giants from time to time. Thought he had more career homers but that's a pretty good total for a pitcher in Candlestick Park.

His pinch hitting career was rather uneventful, 3 for 24 with 2 walks, 1 homer, and 2 RBI.

Back in 1990 he had a pinch home run in one game, and hit a walk-off pinch hit in another.
