I found a 1974D DDO half dollar in change.

Was at a jewelry store buying a present for my wife and noticed that there were a number of Kennedy half dollars in the cash register. I asked the owner if I could buy them from him at face value. He said yes and I bought 21 of them. All are clad and most are ones I will spend. However I took out two 1974 D half dollars and looked at them.

One of them is the 1974 D DDO variety. Probably in EF condition. The doubling in "We Trust" is quite apparent.

First time I ever found one of these.

Anyone else ever find one in the wild and what is the current value of these coins.

This wouldn't count as "out in the wild" but a dealer once gave me an Unc in
change that he said he had won as a doorprize at a coinshow. The unusual
thing about it was that it not only was "traveled" but it was obviously not a
mint set coin. Mint set coins aren't very nice but they are fairly well struck
from new dies and this one was weakly struck from heavily worn dies. There
are a lot reported in circulation and most turn up in XF/ AU (maybe VF now
    days).

This coin is hardly rare but I imagine it should be worth several dollars.

PCGS shows the 74DDO FS-101 (FS-015) with a Pop of 19 in MS63 and 188 higher. Neat coin for the low value IMO
  • They're pretty common in my experience. The Red Book had an MS65 about $150 if I recall, but I've not seen a price spread across the grades. I have a dozen or more of them, including one still in the Mint cellophane. A variation on this doubling, and much harder to find, (I have one) is the 1973D DDO. It's in the RB but I have found the RB prices are not to be relied on as gospel but rather may be a starting place. IMO

Mint set versions of this have very little variability and range from drab low end MS-63 to a decent MS-64.

Most are pretty common looking and would grade MS-63 to MS-63+. I've heard of Gems but never seen one.
