Burglary of Vehicle- Dealer Inventory Stolen

Vehicle Burglary

On Sunday October 6, 2013 Dealers Judy Cash and Jim Lee of Capital Coins in Olympia, Washington were victims of a vehicle burglary after leaving the Portland coin show and stopping in Woodland, Washington.

The suspects jimmied the lock of their van and removed brief cases containing over $50,000 in gold, slabs and raw coins.

A white sedan and pearl grey van are possible suspect vehicles. The sedan was driven by a white female and the van was occupied by a white male.

Four trays of raw coins in 2x2's were taken and have the identifying markings pictured below.

( sorry no link in the email just an image of the reverse of a buffalo nickel )

A more detailed list of stolen coins will be sent out when available.

Looks like its getting to the point where dealers need to rent armored trucks when traveling to and from shows. I hope they catch the thieves.

As easy as opening a door or knocking out a window and grabbing a small box or briefcase. Bam. $50k+ gone in what, 10-15 seconds? Geez guys, why don't you make it easy for them?

If they follow you to another city, they know what they're doing. You better know what you're doing and what you're gonna do.

With the rash of recent coin dealer car burglaries, you would think that security would be high up on the list. But, it always happens to the other guy and not you. Guess what, to the other guy YOU ARE THE OTHER GUY.

Maybe but some may leave the thing running in a parking lot while they run in for a quick cheeseburger too and lose the whole armored truck!image

Since this is a public forum, the more frequency such specific information is posted, the more opportunities/ideas there are for perps to continue their activities.

Think of the implication(s) of posting such personal info on a public forum.

Heck why bother robbing banks, when there are easier/safer targets.

    Flame away.

    That's my 1/4 dollar's worth:

I go to coin shows frequently and most of the time I pack some coins with me for sale and trade. BUT, I have NEVER, EVER, left my coins in my car unattended for ANY length of time EVER!! I can NOT understand why anyone would. image

Traveling to and from a show is the most dangerous time for a dealers inventory to be stolen. I never leave the car and if dining go thru a drive thru eating it in the car as I drive. Also one has to be on the lookout if being followed. I may have 100 gold coins in the bank box but only will take 5-10 to a show. I like keeping a low profile. If you set up at a show and have hundreds of gold coins your risking becoming a target.

Two dealers leaving a coin show should always take their inventory with them when they go to restaurants, or even emergency rest stops.

Sorry for these two dealers. Hope they are insured, but I think insurance only cover when the person is in the presence of the coins, not when the coins are locked up away in some car.

  • Terrible news. I hope they get these thieves. I hope everyone takes whatever precautions they feel appropriate.
I wish the frequency of these threads would diminish, seriously.

I am thankful I could leave one of my most valued items, truly rare, in the middle of Times Square at 12 noon and no one would bother to pick it up or even notice it.

Not sure if this is the same theft posted in an earlier thread...... I hope so.... these occurrences are far too common and totally unnecessary. Cheers, RickO
