Clemente

I really dig these old clips, and Tim got me itchin' when he posted #500 from Mantle.

Here's RC going upper tank off of his front foot.

    Great clip! Thanks for posting
  • This deserves a bump up. What a hitter.
  • I could watch this on loop 100 times
A couple of things I notice as I never had the pleasure of seeing him play live
The front foot obviously - unreal
The lag wrist and late release - a page out of the Ben hogan fundamentals book. What power.
And his age! He had to be 36 at least at the 71 asg??? Amazing athleticism at the plate and around the bases.
    Legend.
  • One of the things that often gets overlooked regarding this legends career is that he hit during the pitching era against probably the best pitching the game has seen. Koufax, Gibson, Drysdale Juan Marachal, Spahn, Seaver the list goes on and on he hit and continued to hit when the league tailed of. He's one of the hobby favorite's and I look at him like Mantle in some respects meaning there's no such thing as a bad Clemente card.

I really think Clemente is somewhat under appreciated. His offensive and defensive talents were amazing. I really wish I could have actually seen him play.
  • ''Instead of playing winter ball in Puerto Rico during the 1958-59 offseason, Roberto Clemente served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He spent six months of his military commitment at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. While at Parris Island, Clemente received his basic training with Platoon 346 of the 3rd Recruit Battalion. At Camp Lejeune, he was an infantryman. The rigorous training he received helped Clemente physically by gaining ten pounds of muscle and ridding him of long-time back pain. Having served until 1964, Roberto was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.''

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Being a Marine and having served as a marine DI at PI twice this is one of my favorite subsets to collect, ballplayers that also served there country. Ted Williams, Hank Bauer, Clemente all Marines and all have displays at the Parris Island Mueseum. American Hero's for sure and real men!
