Toned Silver Eagle from Sealed 25th Anniversary Sets...

Just got this coin back from grading for a client. This was submitted in a sealed box to PCGS, never been opened. Always amazes me when coins like this come out of OGP.

Would it also have something to do with where it is stored? Must be something other than just leaving it in the original govt packaging. Thoughts?

What would cause these to tone like this? Where were these stored to get this color. These sets arent even 3 yrs old...

Silver is a very reactive metal. It oxidizes (tarnishes) very quickly, especially when a more reactive metal is not immediately present. Think of the silverware that needed shined every year. It is a very fast process to create a layer of oxidized silver just thick enough (nanometers) for thin film interference to occur.

All of my collection is in a safe deposit box!
Coin broke out of capsule in transit and interacted with the velvet. Not unusual at all, although PCGS does not always grade them MS69 when this happens.
Just my 2 cents

Thanks for posting the photo, Ian!
Mitch is right. I opened a sealed set, the coin was out of the capsule and WOW, what color.

My Washington Quarter Registry set...in progress
Of course since the box was opened I cannot prove it came from the 5 coin set - but it is pretty nonetheless!

Right.
Original US Mint Air Tight Packaging unless, of course, those "air tights" came apart as they so often do.

While some coins broke free from their capsules during transit, in my experience having opened several sealed boxes some of the coins were never in their capsules to begin with. They were loose in the box and their capsules were completely intact. Unless those coins were Houdini's it was just poor handling at the mint.

My thought as well.
Toning is pretty.
<< <i>The fact that the coin was awarded an MS69 is amazing in and of itself since I seriously doubt that those "lines" between the rays are on the slab. >>
So am I, especially with all the little untoned spots . . . Milk spots or undeveloped milk spots?

Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

that grade is a big mistake-maybe they bumped it for color
