Why has this forum gotten so sleepy?

Are a large number of the participants government employees who are now without a paycheck?

Is the market itself just slowing down (except for the trophy coins)?

It shouldn't be this sleepy in October.

Maybe the forum is like a restaurant, or a Broadway show. Perhaps there is only so much staying power until the masses seek the next big thing elsewhere.

I for one hope that is not the case, but I do agree things were much more lively in bygone days. There were certain episodes & feuds, I won't name the players, everyone knows who they are, that came and went much like "angles" on the pro wrestling circuit.

I thought it might be interesting to create an alt with a quirky persona to liven things up, but of course that would be against the forum rules image

Maybe it is time for our CU forum moderator to open membership for some of the booted former members, certainly not all of them. Some of the old members contributed quite a bit of real coin information, others not so much.

I haven't had a kid in the shop since the beginning of summer. One numismatist came in last week and bought a coin in the shop. Two older women came in to see how much I would pay for a silver dollar. Same old , different day. Today a girl came in with a gold necklace. The pawn shop offered her $30. I sent her to another pawn shop. She wondered how come it wasn't worth more. I told her I did not know. It's only worth what it's worth.

I would post pictures, but it violates the trust built.

Things in life have a cycle. There are times when things are jumping and the activity level is high. There are times where things are just the opposite. Further, there are topics that come and go on the forums. Some generate large interest and hold a widespread audience. Some are arcane and of interest to a small audience. Some have plenty of substance and threads on same are very educational and beneficial. Some have minimal substance and are merely amusing or annoying.

Over long periods of time (years or decades) the same subjects are brought up multiple times. How often does a retread thread hold wide interest, especially among those who have seen and read prior posts on the same topic. Then again, different areas of the hobby wax and wane in popularity so threads on those topics can either "have legs" and stay on page one or can quickly descend into the abyss.

People come and go on the forums (by choice or by force) and for those who have been around awhile, it can be difficult to show the same level of interest and enthusiasm.

In general, the forums sponsored by our host mirror what happens in non forum life (school, work, community, church, sports, etc.).

If things seem sleepy on the forums, just wait and it will liven up again. Or, try to post a few times and generate some "buzz" yourself. The forums are still a great place to play in the hobby, learn, socialize and see great coins.

P.S. Though it likely will not happen, the forums would definitely liven up a bit if our hosts brought back the "Open Forum". That was a lively place and generated lots of "buzz" and excitement. Too bad that some posters to the OF went beyond the bounds of propriety and caused it to go "poof".

This place used to be like Dodge City and the only ones who ever got some sleep were
the school marms and anyone who took a shot at Marshal Dillon. Chester and Doc kept
the streets pretty clean after the fact.

It's great to see a few new gunslingers like you but it sure ain't like the olden days no

Or the freaky/scary icon..... image I was not kidding in the other thread - that thing was in my nightmare - cat sized with crab eyes on 2 foot stalks and it could think more than I care to recall. Not cool.
But yes, some folks get jumped sometimes. I think everyone has me on ignore sometimes and I am actually posting to no one - but then I get a response or PM that keeps me going image

Obviously, the answer is we need more wood box threads. Problem solved. image

Best wishes to all members, past and present.

I can't speak for anyone else, but other than my attending the Long Beach show last week and writing an extensive report about it, I really don't see much going on which I find interesting in the hobby. In fact, the highlight of the show for me was selling some coins and getting fair prices for them. I found virtually nothing which interested me (though the material may have interested others).

I am not finding much material I am looking for. I have purchased all of three type coins in the last seven years, have found a handful of Liberty Nickels over this time to add to my collections, and I have sold ten coins - more than I have bought in the last five years.

I'm not going to post specifics about what are imo subpar for the grade coins being offered to me, or what I think are ridiculously priced coins that I think only a fool would buy, or about what I think is the latest marketing hype, because I just don't see the point of doing so.

    Okay, here's some modern trivia.
If you bought a 2012 Proof set, and are sick of coins, mine sold out of the shop and I need to replace them. Silver or Clad ?
I was shocked at what it's going to cost to replace them. Not even a year later.

Perhaps a couple of statements by Chance the Gardener (Peter Sellers - in "Being There", 1979) would be helpful here:

"As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden."

"In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

I've gotten pretty bored with collecting ... want to be outside more, inside less ... currently selling off some things to free up discretionary funds to buy a fishing boat. Basically, I reached a point of diminishing returns, where making my set any nicer without spending a ton more money takes a really long hunt, and living in the middle of nowhere (although I like it for 1,000 other reasons) doesn't make it any easier. Pretty much gone as far as I think I'm going to go, at least for the time being.

The Internet and the availability of information is a double edged sword. The fun in the hunt is disappearing because it's now possible to find almost every available quality coin. You can see what it sold for, what holder it used to be in, what it used to look like. It's all retreads. Fresh material and fresh topics are few and far between anymore. And there's no going back.
