That's usually my go-to answer but I also bought a bunch of Felix Jose rookies in the summer of 1991 I think it was! He got hot for about a week or two and I stocked up on that "investment."
When did you start posting again Stingray? Haven't seen you in a while.

Off and on for the last couple weeks. Took a break for a while from collecting. Saving some money to finish the basement. Now that it is done. I need to fill it up with stuff.
Bob Hoerner Rookie Cards. I thought he was going to be better than Dale Murphy. He had an amazing college career at Arizona State and a very good start to his MLB career. I still have hundreds of his rookie card
Yup...I saw someone mention Felix Jose, I did that too...Ooops. But after McGwire, Canseco and Weiss, he seemed like a good bet. I also stocked up on Steve Decker at about the same time....Ooops.
Not baths by any extent, but surely would love a do-over.

<< <i>Back in the late 80s and early 90s I got caught up huge in the rookie card craze. I sold a 1956-73 Clemente run in about EX for store credit that turned out to be Gooden, Canseco, Mattingly and Eric Davis rookie cards. Still hurts. >>
Don't mean to pour salt on the wound....but WOW THAT MUST HURT!
Is it just me or is a large percentage of the Steroid problems tied to two franchises? Texas and Oakland? I have been thinking of the various people listed here but from Juan Gonzalez to the Bash Brothers to Palmeiro and on...it would be interesting to put together a family steroid tree and see the roots tied to these two clubs.
went out to see a collection of a widow in simi valley, CA. her deceased husband had spent umpteen dollars on graded and ungraded 80s/90s baseball. He specialized in Garciaparra PSA 10 rookies, which he had evidently spent multiple hundreds on in the heyday. I approximate 4000-5000 nomar rookies. He had told her before he died that "if marketed properly," there were over a million bucks in cards. I offered $6K and not sure I would have broken even. Probably 500K cards in total. No idea if she ever sold, but no way for more than 10K to a sucker.
My biggest bath ever was not on Cards but on a Comic Book. Way back in the late 70's early 80's Marvel came out with a Comic called "The Nam", very graphic realistic comic about the Viet Nam War. So I at the time was heavy into speculating on new issues from Marvel and DC, was making some pretty good coin, cause if you could see the trends and had a wholesaler in your pocket, you were allowed to pre-order quantities of any comic book about 2 months ahead of time for about 50% of the cover price. So I had pre-ordered a factory box of 300 of "The Nam" issue #1. Apparently the print run was pretty low cause within a day or two of them hitting the shelves they were in the re-sale market for $40-$75 each. I made a quick 10-15 thousand and decided this was going to remain a hot commodity, so for the next 6-8 months I pre-ordered 1000 each of issue #2-#8.
Well the market dropped off before I even got going on issue #2, sold a few dozen at $10 each, never sold diddly squat of the rest, moved them around for about 10 years (We're talking 40 each 300 Count Boxes, like 2000 lbs of comics just for those) until I started using them for Firewood after I had donated to every Charity in a 6 State area!!!
Ah the good times...........YeeHah

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
As Rickey Henderson approached the stolen base record we figured it would be smart to buy a bunch of his 1981 cards. In those days one figured 2nd year cards still had room to grow- his rookie card was already booking at $185 by then. So $30 apiece went for 7 or 8 of his '81 Topps, $20 apiece for about 7 or 8 of his '81 Fleers (both versions). I think we also bought five '84 Donruss cards for $15 apiece or something.
My dad bought me 2 boxes of 87 Fleer basketball cards (when I was 12). I traded them for 2 boxes of 89 pro set football and some 87 topps will clarks and 88 donruss gregg jeffries. Didn't get the best return on that deal.
