Just lost this case...and I am feeling surprisingly bad about not increasing my snipe

I don't know how many of these are left floating around, but just caught this auction 15 minutes before end - put a snipe in at 2322.00, but then had to go to the c***per. Sitting there I was thinking of going higher - strolled back right after the auction ended and am now feeling remorse, or is it the Chinese burrito acting up again?

    I hope this is true.....

Your bid was probably right. Sniping is like using the force. Just trust yourself.

My budget is entirely obliterated - Tim. That is probably the only reason I didn't put a mega snipe in. image
Honestly, I need to go to rehab because I ended up winning these lol

  • So each set is $172. Is that market price? Good? Expensive? I am not sure what factory sets for this year usually go for.

Factory sets go from about $125-$175, I believe. I was on this case in the prior listing because it was listed as pick-up only and he is in Huntington Beach - same as me. Nice! But he changed his mind about the description, ended the auction early and then reslisted. So much for my steal of a deal. In my mind, the price is top dollar. I wouldn't lose sleep on this.

  • Correct, however, my view was more the novelty of an uncracked 1984 DR case. I suspect that most of these were ripped looking for the mattingly and the strawberry early on. Also, being a very popular set, I cant see many of these sitting (like other DR years). Because there are so many PSA 10s floating around I dont see high break-up value. I was thinking it would be good just to have this case. I never saw one for sale, but dont look for it. I was wondering about how rare a set-case actually is.

I think that the main draw of the 1984 DR Factory Set is the Diamond Kings and not the Matingly RC. The Diamond Kings were named Perez STEELE in the factory sets while the wax boxes had Perez STEEL printed on them. The "Steele" versions are more desirable and PSA 10 versions command a high price.

With the Diamond Kings variations there are also variations on the Ron Darling and another card (next to the Darling) something do to with the card numbers.

That's funny. There was a elderly woman contacting people online about purchasing those three cases. She decided to go the consignment route with the ebay seller. Hopefully that's how it all worked out and they didn't just lowball her with a price and then flip them. Just weird to see a thread start about the same exact three cases I was talking to a buddy with about a week ago.

Congrats on the wins. I actually wanted the fleer case and had a good bid in early, but the kids didn't go down easily and I missed the end. That was good money for the Donruss case. Factory sets can be had for far less. The draw was the rarity of the sealed case and the chance it was centered well. If it was opened, the seller would have a good idea on the centering.

On the fleer case however, you might want to look at it when you get it. I don't believe it was a sealed case as advertised. One of the ends was clearly opened and retaped imo. I have had several of these and both should look the same, with the "bulk" line clearly legible and not broken.

If my memory serves, the woman shopping the cases said that the vending cases had been resealed but that the tape was old.

Was watching that auction as well. Very surprised it went that high.

This is all pretty amusing - I literally caught these cases 20 minutes before the auction ended while surfing ebay for racks. Unfortunately, I wont be able to see the fleer case for months (as usual) but thanks for the advice - as for the DonRuss case, you are spot on Jim - I was only thinking of buying the case and keeping it sealed because I suspect that there aren't many of these left although there are tons of graded 84DR. I still love the set and it is iconic to me because the set is gorgeous and Tigers won the WS that year. The 84 Topps vending is garbage, I just never got around to buying one vending case from that year and needed it.

  • Damn! Okay I need advice, thanks for your posts Reggie and Jim, I checked more carefully and it is obvious that the 1984 (Topps) Vending has been resealed - if you look at the 5th picture of the bottom of the case you can see the staples pulled. The case was clearly advertised as factory sealed. I only want a factory sealed vending case. What would you guys do?

Staple on the left looks ok, no??
  • Possibly, but it could just have settled back down. Also, you would only have to open 1 side if you wanted to search and seal correct? I am not an expert on these matters at all, so any advice is welcome. I am really only interested in a sealed 1984 vending to fill in a gap in my run.

It's a tough call. But if you only want a sealed case I would contact the seller before making a payment/they ship it. It's going to be an uphill climb after you get it in your hands.

Regardless of how we may rationalize that it's okay you may want to look at it from the perspective of any issues you may run into trying to convince a buyer it's okay should you decide to sell down the road.
