Are extremely tough coins sometimes located on CU?

I've been looking for a strong Seated Dollar in PR66 for some time. Have been outbid at several auctions and declined to pay prices from dealers that just looked TOO far above book and archives. Realize such a coin is tough -- even tougher in PCGS, tougher yet if CACed. I've done some productive shopping via CU message boards, but nothing at this level ($20,000 - $60,000). I wonder whether coins like a high-end Seated Dollar are ever located through CU. If an individual collector decided -- maybe getting out after many years, say -- to sell one, would he/she keep an eye out for an appropriate WTB on the BST board, or is that a stretch? (I once CU'd a list of about ten coins that included some medium-tough ones, noting I'd like to buy any or all. One wise-guy deadpanned a reply of "Yeah, wouldn't we all." Makes you feel like Norville from Nerdville, you know?) Anyway, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

  • Yes, I once purchased an almost 5-figure coin from the BST and I believe there was recently a thread by smalleagle about selling a 5 figure coin to another forum dealer who had a buyer lined up.

Yes it happens but not offten, my guess is that many of the players at that level have connections with one or more of the major dealers who help when its time to sell. I would look throught he registry sets, if you find a coin or two that you like contact the owner and tell them that when thay decide to sell you're interested.

  • Thanks for the good suggestion, Coinbuf. I have a large PCGS Set Registry myself but have never bothered to file a composite set nor have I looked at those of others. Easy to do?
