BBCE with 1980 Topps BB boxes at $675

Wow! These look nice but I just picked one of these up on Ebay several months ago (with BBCE wrap) for $470.

These are going through the roof.

There was a 1979 Topps BB wax box that ended on Ebay recently at $751 (best offer). Looks like 1980 is creeping up to those levels.

  • They do look nice but it doesn't say sealed case in listing.

At that price a breaker would need to yield 5-30 gems to break even depending on the mix. Tempting but I can't do it...
    Come on!
    No I can't.
    Do it...

I picked a 1980 Topps box from a sealed case from BBCE Monday afternoon for $650. I almost bought another today, but used restraint. I can't justify buying 2 at this point. The one I have is staying sealed.

  • Does the BBCE require a special membership? I tried to purchase some items a couple weeks ago, but there was no way to pay at checkout? odd

I noticed this too. The price was $300-325 a year ago.

    Thanks,

1K by next spring might be a stretch but can certainly see $800+. A BBCE shrinkwrapped 80 box actually already sold for $900 on ebay just recently.

I just grabbed a couple of these.

1980 Topps Baseball Unopened Wax Box. Box contains 36 unopened wax packs. We got in a case today (Sept. 20th, 2013) and have clean, fresh boxes that look like the day they were made!

Saw one box on ebay with BBCE wrap that has been bid up to 500 with three days left. It looks like the corner is a little dinged on the one from Ebay . The new one's on bbce look perfect.

These sold out in less than a day. It should be interesting to see where the market goes for these! I wonder how many of these will get ripped and how many remained sealed?

Looks like that one actually sold for $800...still an amazing price though.
  • 1981 Topps boxes don't contain a big RC like 1979 Ozzie or 1980 Rickey, but there are several popular RCs (Fernando, Raines, Gibson) and a design collectors really seem to like.

With 1980 Topps starting to (in my opinion) hit a price point where there may not be that much more increase in the near future, 1981 unopened still seems like a good bet.

The frenzy continues. Where were these buyers when they were $300 last year?

Buying at that point, as well (though not as much as I should have, lol). And though they may have been going for $300 on ebay a year ago for a raw risky box, I believe BBCE price was around $400, if I'm not mistaken. It's just getting tougher to find these boxes from 1980 and earlier, especially this clean from a case, which is really the primary reason I purchased one.

  • Yo six hunji for 1980 Topps boxes? Somebody be tripping hard. It's crazy difficult to even pull a 9 Henderson out that box and that's just half the cost. For real: cats be getting all types of silly on a few dudes hyping this unopened stuff. It's baby thighs, yo. Straight butterfly kisses and princess tricycles with sparkly glittery streamers and crap. Little ponies and what not. 600 on 1980 Topps is straight dummin like Funkdoobiest playas nahmean. Better off buying a 9 Rickey solo and an 8 ball and red Cisco. 1980 Boxes is corn starch with a side of formula yo. Trippin.

    LOL
  • Laugh all you want - I requested double tape on my shipping box - easily 20% premium right there.

No joke these boxes are super clean. I will post detailed pics upon receipt. Easily 2 gem Rickey's per box. image

Missed the 80 wax, but would've had a hard time pulling trigger at that price considering I picked one up not long ago for 525.

I was pleased to see more 81 cellos though and scooped a box of those.

Though it seems at these recent prices ripping for subs and expecting return seems dicey at best.

If you don't find reward in the journey, your destination is likely to underwhelm.

Personally, I'd rather pull my own Rickey 7/8, and anything else I get, than to buy someone else's 9...despite any cost savings.

That being said, most of my recent purchases won't be ripped for another couple years, til the kid can hopefully enjoy it with me.

Either way, these are shiny new toys and I'm starting to enjoy my unopened collection more than my graded and raw collection, which is saying quite a bit.

  • wow. they sold out at $675. I couldn't afford that price at the moment. Eh. I guess I will have to wait for another day they have them when the timing is better.

I think its an investment price and not a ripping price. Obviously the chances of a PSA 10 Henderson are very slim. And even, say a PSA 10 Ryan or Rose for that matter would seem tough. At which case, what do you have? Just to have the cards, the entire set could be had for $100 or less depending on quality. So truly you are paying for unopened, not for the cards. Or in a special sense, the wax wrappers and original gum.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
Another thing to take into account with these boxes is the fact that these were all super clean from a case and as an unopened collector that is definitely worth a premium to me over a random loose box of 1980 Topps baseball wax packs.

If your intention is to submit cards to PSA for grading, it's most certainly more cost effective to buy high grade raw lots anyway, if ROI is your primary concern.

  • Congratulations to all who snagged a box or two. I missed out - was travelling between countries. image 1980 remains relatively elusive. IMO there is very little risk of downside movement at that price.

I just looked a my invoices and see that I picked up a 1980 Topps wax box 13 months ago from BBCE for $350. I purchased a second one from this case because I would like a cleaner copy for my display.

Away from the boards for about 7 months and now all of the sudden 80's is hot? What happened? Any ideas what my 75OPC baseball (1 box) and 78OPC baseball (2 boxes) would go for? I need to get cards graded but i am still debating whether to depart with them or not.

Amazing how a BBCE package always seems to be a panacea when you're pissed off. Had to jet home during lunch, and all I'm going to say is if you're awaiting one of these, prepare to be pleased. 9.5 on the corners, mattingly.

I have never bought any product from Steve that has disappointed me. Mine just arrived, so I will open the packaging when I get home, so I can view the box. For those who have already received their box, does it say "from a sealed case?"
  • It won't say sealed as the case wasn't actually sealed or opened by Steve. But he bought the case entact from a shop who had opened the flaps so technically not sealed. I don't mean to speak for Steve but I had asked him this and wanted to share.
While not from a sealed case - a clean entact case with extreme clean mint boxes.
And in the sealed shipping box we are talking 10x return easily given recent market activity image
