1911-D Quarter Eagle (or not)

s4nys4ny Posts: 1,573 ✭✭✭
I bid on this eBay auction yesterday and was the high bidder until the last
moments. The coin was listed as a 1911 but I think I see a D. The coin
was listed as Choice AU, but it looks both cleaned and perhaps removed
from jewelry. Obverse looks funky around 3 and 9 o'clock close to the rims.
Maybe repaired.

The coin sold for $417, so other's saw the D also. Maybe the D is
on the holder, not the coin.

What do you think?

    FWIW...I see D.

It doesn't have the diagnostics of a 1911-D $2 1/2 gold coin----raised wire rim on right side of the obverse and scalloping at the TES on the reverse where the reverse die hit the edge of the reeded collar.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I wonder if the sale sticks or the coin gets returned. I will be waiting to
see if there is any feedback.

At $306 I was willing to take a shot at the coin, at $417 I didn't want
to deal with the likely return of a coin that is cleaned and ex-jewelry.

At least it looks to be real which is not always the case in this very heavily counterfeited series.

It may be the real deal, under magnification there is a D but its impossible to tell if it has been chased or not. It is hard to be sure as the pic starts to get very pixilated but it looks to have the correct die polish line at the tip of the arrowheads. I'd say its a 50/50 shot at a weak D.

It honestly looks like a weak D to me?

The lack of scalloping on the reverse rim kills it for me. Given the condition of the coin, there
is no reason it would not show in the images.

I clearly see the D, I just don't know if it was applied by the Denver Mint.

I do not at all mean to imply that the seller added the D. The seller has over 10,000
feedback ratings and is 100% positive. The seller did not advertise the coin
    as a 1911-D.

The D's on other slabbed and graded 1911-D Quarter Eagles look a bit different.
I probably looked at 25 coins and didn't see this style D.

The coin was delivered and buyer, krf2bama, left positive feedback.

I found the feedback interesting..."item as described, thanks"

I see a 'D', too. It is plain as day, right before the 'OLLARS'.
