Regarding PCGS's 10K reward just to see an authentic 1964 Peace Dollar

Once the check was cut would PCGS then be obligated to call the police?

I've wondered about that one.

    I accept cash only.

If I found one I would get an experienced lawyer in the field before going around telling anyone about it and trying to accept rewards.

Edited to add: I am a lawyer, but would not feel comfortable dealing with type of scenario myself.

    TPRC.

The litigation over the ownership of the ten 1933 double eagles is not over yet (and likely won't be for a long time). So it is premature to say whether hiring a lawyer did or did not turn out well.

Sanction--You are, or course correct, I don't even pretend to know when they did get their lawyers involved, and it is important to get lawyers involved early when significant rights are involved. Consider it my misguided attempt at humor and my dismay at the way that trial went from an evidentiary standpoint. But I will continue to hold out hope, if not expectation, for a reversal or new trial.

Why? There is no police report claiming a theft.

There wasn't a police report claiming a theft of the 1933 double eagles, either.

I believe it is possible for a felony to be committed, in this case theft over $400., without a police report being filed first.
I'll allow brighter minds to correct me on that issue though as certainly I may be legally wrong.

It would take a lot more than $10K, it would have to be cash, and only under my terms. image Cheers, RickO

At least they had a fighting chance. The only way they could have kept them was by hiding them for life. Pretty hard to do in their scenario. At least in a court of law they had a chance to win back possession and another chance on appeal.

In the alternate you could take all the 1933 Saints and 1964-D Peace Dollars you can find and live in a cave in Timbuktu the rest of your life.

I think the lowball offer is representative of the fear PCGS may slip up and wrongly accept a D. Carr Peace in a moment on weakness.

True, but IMO there isn't a judge alive who has the stones to rule against the Government in this case.

    This is easy.

Put the coin in a Swiss bank.

Make PCGS fly there to see it.

They won't have a problem with that, as long as it doesn't turn out to be one of the restrikes image

In recent years the Swiss have been cooperating with the US Gov't, in particular the IRS. Swiss banks are not bank you want to hide assets in these days. Just sayin'. image

Who knows what threats the Federales pulled on the Swiss to make them cave to their demands? I think the Nazi gold story could have gotten a whole lot uglier.

I'm pretty sure that HRH once said here that PCGS would simply authenticate/grade the coin and return it to the submitter.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Is HRH an expert authenticator? Would he be able to see examine such a coin and verify that it wasn't a really good counterfeit? If such a coin actually existed, wouldn't it make sense to submit it to PCGS's Paris office for proper authentication and slabbing?

Out of over 300,000 1964-D Peace Dollars minted I have to
believe that some were saved from the destruction order.

It is illegal to own them in the United States but other countries
are not bound by US laws.

Show the coin outside the US and collect the reward.

    Use a fake ID.

Why would you need an ID to show someone a coin?

I think just a little bit higher than the local police would be called. Someone really high up wants THAT coin.

The coin would show up in the pop reports and the SS would be all over PCGS demanding to know who sent it in and to whom it was returned.

Maybe. However, is it a crime to do nothing?

Now, if the reward were paid in cash, PCGS, when asked, could always say "we have no idea who this person was".

PCGS would probably have to have some sort of directive/ultimatum from the SS that says report it or else.
