This stuff makes me sick...

It truly bothers me to see people selling this stuff LINK. It was on my radar, as I'm always looking for '79 OPC boxes. It's scary to think that there will soon be two resealed boxes of '79 OPC for sale, thanks to this seller.

  • Is there a legit market for this kind of stuff or is this plain and simple a reseal kit?

Then buy it and burn all of it. If you care that much about it, do something about it.

There is nothing illegal about what they are selling. Who knows, someone might buy it because they like to collect old card boxes or make art out of the wrappers. If the buyers intention is to make fake packs, and it can be, then they are clearly in the wrong, not the seller.

Say someone buys a gallon of gas and a book of matches, and then commits arson. Is the clerk who sold the items in just as much or more trouble than the arsonist?

In any case, where do you draw the line? Should ebay delete postings and ban people that sell wrappers/boxes?

When you can find more than one practical use for wrappers and a wax box, then you can use the "gas and matches" argument.

Last I check, there's plenty of reasons to buy gas and matches...other than arson.

You should really run the gas and matches analogy back through the logic machine on top of your shoulders. It's really bad..... I would say the person selling this and claiming it won't be used for resealing is more like someone selling a "tobaco water pipe" and claiming it's not going to be used for weed. Since it CAN be used for other purposes it's not illegal, nor should it be. But it's for weed and you know that.

As for "doing something about it", we are all ears. Buying it and burning it is as dumb a suggestion as your other comment. If there is something to be done, let us know. Otherwise we will continue to post this stuff and be pissed. The only action I can come up with is to buy boxes from sealed cases. That's it.

I'm not asking for anyone to be banned - or even for this listing to be ended. I'm just expressing concern. Why are you so defensive?

I'm torn about this auction. They aren't selling the gum and people do collect boxes and wrappers (though 36 of a given wrapper is a bit much). I collect boxes and wrappers. I just went through a pared down my collection when the file folder I was keeping them in fell apart after 30 years. For some reason I had about 50 1989 Fleer wrappers and many duplicates of other wrappers. So I threw away everything above qty 5 that was the early 80s and newer. However, I do think wrappers make a neat collectible.

There is a legit market. I, for one, like to have a wrapper as part of my complete sets (and all variations if there were different wrappers). Empty boxes, not so much for me, just a pain to store/display, though I'm sure others like them (especially player collectors for those displayed on the box). Gum, no legit reason to include it except for resealing (though at least on this sale I didn't see the gum included.

I have a question(s) for the guys that are really upset about this. I followed the whole BBG debacle with the sale of the wrappers and gum and I hated to see that...seemed incredibly obvious what that "kit" was being purchased/sold for. However, where do you draw the line on what's OK to sell/collect...empty boxes, or empty boxes with the wrappers, gum included, year and brand of the product, etc.? I don't see a lot of angry posts about a '72 empty display box for sale, or individual wrappers for sale from the 50's, 60's and 70's. This leads me to believe that these are seen as "collectible"...is that the case? Also, I know there are A LOT of rippers of unopened material on the boards - what do you do with the wrappers and boxes after you open the cards? Anytime I see a youtube video of a "rip", the person is always careful not to tear the wrapper...why would that be???? I'm guessing he is planning on keeping the wrapper. Anyway, feel free to weigh in...I was just curious what others thought about some of this.

I have one wrapper from most years I have opened and have thrown out everything else. I will never sell them. As for the Gum, it's more egregious to sell it with the packs, but really people take gum from junk wax and break it up. this many wrappers is not for collecting.

  • At last count I have a out 50 wrappers 70's and 80's. I am planning to display someday. That said if a collector I knew was looking for some I would certainly not without them from a trade. Not sure I would sell.
But there is an obvious line being crossed when you include the gum.
Smart collectors on this board know the difference. It's the less informed on eBay who by resealed crap I feel bad for. But this is America - best we can do is keep the topic open and inform as many as we can.

I'm pretty sure I'd scratch my head if I was behind the guy paying for a can of gasoline and asking for matches...

  • I'm not an expert when it comes to unopened material. I have a question for the experts on here. What are the chances that a 1970's wax box are re-sealed packs sold on ebay?

pretty high unless its a dealer thats known for selling unopened 1970s stuff....I learned the hard way a few months ago...

My first 3 1977 waxboxes were bought on ebay shortly after I re-entered the hobby. I set them aside for years, then I found out about resealing when buying and opening an obviously resealed 1978 waxbox - I looked more closely at my 1977s and discovered that they were all re-seals...obviously it was too late to do anything. So I am on the side of those that attempt to voice and police. This board has been invaluable to me.

  • I have sold wrappers lots of times. I disagree with the assumption of Resealing. I can see a market for wrappers going back to the 70's and earlier. People do collect them. The gum is a completely different matter.

I can see someone wrapping up 1990 topps or 1994 stadium club in those wrappers and packing the box to make it look full for display purposes. May be a good use for those 3200 count box of junk commons.

    Thanks,
