What is the most ideal way to display a vintage raw set?

I just purchased a nice raw 1976 Topps baseball set. How does everyone display and store their sets for viewing? Do you display in albums? If so, what kind? I was thinking penney sleeves and top loaders, but I hate to shove the set in a box. At the same time, I don't want to damage the cards. Any input would be appreciated.

  • There are some type of binders that cover the plastic sheets when shelved. Someone has a nice display years ago that had them listed by year. Cool set to display!

    These are awesome binders

See thread above. I have these, and they work really well for all of my raw sets.

These keep the dust and light out, and they provide good support for the pages when shelved vertically. You just need to make sure that the you fill the binder completely with the clear plastic pocket pages, otherwise you're pocket pages will sag inside and potentially damage the cards. The Mini set you see is 660 cards held about equally in two binders. The binder thickness is 1.5 inches. If you have a smaller set, say 132 cards, then you need to buy a binder that is thinner.

Yes, it doesn't hurt to take the extra precaution of using penny sleeves. I don't bother and haven't had any problems. My raw sets are mostly 6/7/8 quality depending on the year, so it doesn't matter much to me.

These are very nice. A much more affordable version of the Roop binders.

About how much do they run with the custom printing on them? What do you think about the durability of the printing? Ideally it would be transfer lettering, but that would get pricey fast since each binder is different.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

I made the spine/lettering using MS Word. The binders have an outer plastic jacket into which one can slide the labels just like a regular binder. I made the labels a year or two ago, and they haven't faded at all even though they are exposed as you can see in the photo. I used a little heavier paper stock than regular printer paper on some and regular printer paper on others. It doesn't really matter, as the spine is protected behind the clear plastic jacket.

Agree with Indy, these binders are great. As he said, if you are going to store them vertically, you will want to make sure you fill the binders up to keep pages from curling. Otherwise, store them flat.

You don't need to use penny sleeves for standard sized cards.

You do, however, need to be mindful of the page dimensions you use in them. The standard Ultra Pro 9 pocket pages fit with no problem. I had some Ultra Pro 8 pocket pages that display horizontally, and they had a tab on the bottom that I had to cut off to get the pages to fit.

Join their mailing list and wait for a special.... they run them fairly regularly.

I placed my first order of these binders about a week ago. I was holding out for another super discount, but settled on a 15% back to school offer, plus free shipping on orders over $25. I'm anxiously awaiting their arrival.

Now I need to work on a template for a nice overlay for when I put them on my shelf.

Thanks for the feedback. The Univenture binders look like the way to go. I just want to make sure my cards are safe, and these look like they will protect them nicely.
