Unopened Advice---Update: Ripping 1984 Topps Rack

I've never really gravitated towards unopened material, but all the hype lately has gotten me kind of intrigued. I'm going to have the weekend to myself in a couple weeks, and am thinking I might spend some time/money on some unopened material. I'm looking to get a box and would spend up to $150 for the right product...I think that will keep me in the 80s, right? Part of the fun for me would be to recoup some of the cost by grading/selling the best examples of cards and packs, but if I don't recoup the entire cost, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Any suggestions?

If I was putting $150 into some '80s vintage unopened I'd see if I could get a 1981 Topps baseball box...love that set and it has lots of future potential.

Not '80s, but 1991 OPC Baseball has a lot of upside at $30 a box.

They are regularly up in the $300's.

I have yet to acquire a box as they dont come by frequently, but are available if you keep an eye on them. I dont know if 89 and 90 are tougher to get, but I dont seem them as much.

Yeah, count me in at $30/box as well. Where should I send the money?

I recently pickup a 84 Topps cello box. I think it has huge potential along with 83 Topps.

For $20 more go with the '84 Topps Rack box.
  • Well, I took Gansett's advice and picked up a 1984 Topps Rack Box. Thanks, Gansett!

My long weekend to rip has come, so I'll be starting tonight. Here's the before pic, ready with penny sleeves and CardSaverIIs for the sharpest of sharp. I know it's not the sexiest rip you've ever seen, but I'll post pics of anything worthwhile. Wish me luck!

Good luck Brad even though I in no way condone this sort of behavior. Ripping the BBCE wrapper to look at the racks is one thing, but to rip open those racks is just plain wrong. image

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Look forward to the results and PICS

  • Here are all the packs.

Best four packs are in the bottom right. Mattingly, Ripken Jr., Strawberry, and Nolan Ryan. Three HOFers also appear in the All-Star cards. I'll rip the other 20 first, and then decide whether to rip these four. The Ryan is definitely not a 10, and the others probably aren't either...death by centering.

  • 4 packs in and headed to bed for the evening. Two best pulls out of 216 cards reviewed are a Ripken and Gwynn. Ripken probably no better than an 8, but Gwynn has a shot at a 10.

excellent stuff, i love threads like this! I would leave those unopened...at least for a while, or try to sell them to get MORE unopened!
  • Thanks all. Ripped another pack this morning, with a decent looking Brett.

To answer questions on the Schmidt, it's got bad damage to the left side.. Just doesn't look good as an unopened pack, so I'm planning to rip the pack.

  • Love this rip...now to see what you get for a grade on the Gwynn. Looks good to me.
