Jack Clark

For those that may have missed it, Jack Clark is trying to bring attention to himself by accusing both Albert Pujols and Justin Verlander of using PED's. Pujols based on bad heresy and Verlander? Because he's having an off year of course. It's Jack Clark's first week as a radio host so he has to make waves

This guy has systematically tried to tarnish the names of baseball greats even since his playing days. My disdain for him started as a big Padre fan and Tony Gwynn fan and he called him out for being a selfish player that only cared about batting titles. Tony was one of the great class acts to ever play the game but did it quietly. To Jack, that meant he didn't care about the team. Tony Gwynn was on the defense for 2 years thanks to his garbage. This was after leaving St Louis and doing something similar with Ozzie Smith. The reality is he wasn't getting enough attention from the fans. Gwynn was Mr. Padre and owned the town and Clark couldn't deal with it.

    Tom Niedenfuer.

what? oh. i thought it was a word association game. n/m. carry on.
  • I don't know the first thing about Jack Clark so no comment on him or his actions.

However, I am perfectly ok with people calling out players on suspicion of PEDs. This is what baseball has become thanks to the players, owners, and the union. If you don't like it then feel free to take it up with all of the liars and cheaters who have come before you. And when clean players finally have had enough perhaps they will grow a pair and demand their union stop protecting the cheats and allow for better testing and bigger suspensions.

Fans have had to suffer having their one time favorite player turn out to be a lying cheater. Perhaps it is time for the players to suffer as well.

Agreed. We've had too many cheats that steadfastly denied they were users only to come out later when confronted with irrefutable evidence. Baseball players have very little credibility these days when it comes to denying PED use.

I'm not a big Jack Clark fan, but put me on the side that thinks it's only a matter of time before Pujols is linked to PEDs.

Im not sure what to make of this
  • The guys from South America are much bigger today then they were when Roberto Clemente and Manny Sanguillen played.

I remember Tony Olivia was a decent size. Sure, guys today use weights and nutrition much better then the players did in the 70's, but
the size of Puljos, Cabrera, Ortiz, Bartolo Colon, and many others just smells of PED's.

  • I'm on the opposite sideline. Pujols has always been a physical specimen. He was a man among boys in high school.Unless he started shooting up in middle school, the guy is just gifted.

Perhaps it is time for players that have gotten to where they are legitimately to suffer? I don't agree. The baseball union is as strong a union as there is. Why wish this on a few honest players that have no control of what the union does or what the cheaters do?

This is the age we live in. Every stud athlete will be scrutinized, especially the latin ones after the Biogenesis scandal including almost all Latin born players. Miguel Cabrera? Jose Bautista? Albert Pujols? There is a cloud hanging over everyone. I think that is what is driving the prices up of 70's and 80's as well. A lot of us are gravitating to those players and a time in baseball when it was more pure, players played for the love of the game, and a spitball was considered a huge scandal.

Came across this one linked to the Niekro video. Nice video showing Gaylord Perry's spitter and Roberto Clemente getting brushed back.

I heard a portion of this chatter on my local sports radio, but missed out hearing who was pointing the finger. When I finally heard the name "Jack Clark", I laughed it off. Guy's a clown. Was a decent ballplayer, but off the field is another story. Good riddance.

Now, depending on how you want to pronounce his last name, Bartolo can smell of several things.

If you're going to make accusations of "fact" about someone's use of PED's, you better have a firm foundation for it. Going public about second hand information as fact is irresponsible. I'm not going to be surprised about anyone getting tied to PED's now or down the road, including Pujols. However, until such evidence is known I feel like I owe people the benefit of the doubt, regardless of my "suspicions". You may have a porn stache and look like a pedophile. That doesn't make it okay for me to publicly accuse you of fondling children. I agree that the PED guys deserve whatever blow back they get, but I still believe in innocent until proven guilty.

its their Opinion, let them talk..... IMO

alot of what Clark, Canseco, etc. have brought up now and in past will be found or has been found to be 100% TRUE

these guys and a few others are blunt and dont care by nature, thus will open their lips and tell the truth more often than make up fables... not unlike Bouton's 'Ball Four' years ago (a good read on Mantle etc doing PEDs and F-ing off)

Gwynn was a great.... but IMO I also thought of him as a guy driven solely by individual batting average/titles, than being a team/winning player...

in the 1980s I was playing baseball (4th rd 1985 draft Expos LHP), not just collecting cardboard, and did play w/against many players you all know....

PS. all of it (PED scandals) is whoopy do IMO, and always will be... you still have to hit that round ball with a round bat

just wonder what kine of player Mantle would have been if he had a million$$ home gym his whole career, instead of a home bar stocked w/PBR?? image
  • He has always been very vocal and opinionated on STL radio. He recently teamed up with another highly contraversial radio host, Kevin Slater (who has been fired numerous times from STL radio) so he is just trying to stir the pot and get ratings for the show and station. Would not read too much into what he says.

I am curious as to what gives you that opinion on Gwynn. I think/thought Gwynn and Raines were friends off the field, and I imagine you met Raines. I think Gwynn was misunderstood because he wasn't a rah rah guy, and certainly wasn't flashy for the camera. But I watched the Padres and Gwynn a lot at Jack Murphy and he would get so excited with a big win. Also, watch the video of Gwynn scoring the run in that All-Star game in the late 80's.

The thing about Gwynn is besides his amazing hitting is that he won 5 gold gloves. He also stole a good amount of bases in his trimmer days. So not only was he hitting but was playing great D and a threat on the bases. It seems like he was doing everything possible to help his team win.

Something to think about...his .338 career batting average is the highest of any player that has played any games after 1960 (Ted Williams was last that was higher)

Thats an amazing feat..think of all the players from the 50's that played through the 60's and everyone else who played over the last 50+ years. A total of 0 have matched or surpassed Gwynn in average.

And another amazing thing is that as he got older he got better. He was forced to retire because he couldn't physically play defense anymore and didn't want to play in the AL as a DH. He wanted to retire as a Padre. But he was an incredible hitter when he retired. He had his best run from 1993-1997 age 33-37.
    1993 .358
    1994 .394
    1995 .368
    1996 .353
    1997 .372

That is an insane 5 year run that isn't supposed to happen in your late 30's
