Weekend of Wax While Wife's Away

Knowing that my wife and kids would be heading to Oregon to visit her mom, I decided it would be a good time for a stroll down Memory Lane. It was a few weeks after Easter and I had just reminisced about Easter 1981, which for this 10 year old was epic. I woke up and went hunting for my basket. When I found it, it contained some of the usual suspects, jelly beans and what not, but this year was different. It was full of wax packs. And not just Topps. What on Earth where these Fleer and Donruss things? Twelve packs of each. It was total carnage. Rip City. 36 packs in 36 seconds, or so it seemed. Then off to church and home to spend the rest of the day sorting my new haul. Had my friends seems these yet? Was I the first? I remember loving the Triple Threat Card in particular. At the time, 3 manufactures seemed awesome. It was always fun to go to a new 7-11 or liquor store for my dad's smokes and see what they had. Even though it spread out my collection, it was fun.

So...the weekend before they left I ordered a box of 81 Fleer Wax and 81 Topps Cello. Just for kicks, I also bought 3 packs each of 77, 78, 79, and 80. They all arrived the same Thursday they left and were waiting on the doorstep when I got home. If you can believe it, I also took off Friday and I spent the next 48 hours eating junk food and pacing myself through my packs. I had to do a lot of sorting and cataloging between 4-6 pack sessions.

Every gum card in the Fleer box was melted together, and I lost some decent cards that way, but overall did OK. I wanted Fernando and got him. Fun story on the cello box...the first pack I opened had the Raines, but as I reached the last 3 pack I still hadn't got the Fernando/Scoscia. I set aside 2 packs to keep, and opened the last pack with a deep breath, and about halfway through, there it was. Neither Raines nor Fernando had great centering, but a Hubie/Mookie looks like a 9/10 for whatever that's worth.

I opened 2 of the 77's and got Fisk with a couple Turn Back the Clocks (Colbert & Wills) in the first and Garvey, Bobby Bonds and Vida Blue in the second. I opened 2 of the 78's and goose egged the first but pulled a decent Whitaker in the second. 2 of the 79's both pretty rough. Foster in one Griffey in the second. And 2 of the 80's yielded a Carew and a Carlton.

I surely didn't hit the jackpot but not only was there zero expectation to, but the goal was a fun trip down Memory Lane, and...Mission Accomplished. I only wish I'd have grabbed a couple Donruss as well. Maybe next Easter.

Anyway, thanks for reading. This was also my test to make sure I figured out how to post a pic. Maybe I'll try using Edit to add some pics of cards. One of these days I'll get motivated to do scans instead of pics.

Great Stuff! If I take a trip down memory lane it will take me back to 87 Topps and some guy named Canseco and Mcgwire.

Love me a good WoWWWA story. Playing hooky from work, ingesting crap and shredding packs from your youth -- now that is how you scratch a nostalgic itch.

Hey Dave, let's not get carried away here. image

Glad you had fun on your trip down memory lane. I remember buying boxes of those 1981 Fleer cards looking for all the error cards. Fun times indeed. Those '81 Donruss have to be one of the worst sets of the '80's...quality control anyone, lol. Thanks for sharing!!!

All that's missing is watching porn with the volume on, and taking a dump with the door open.

I used to get baseball cards in my Easter basket too. I remember one year I found the stuff my Mom was going to put in my basket before Easter. I remember opening the 76 cello packs and then taping them closed with scotch tape. The worst pack re-sealer in the world! Needless to say, Mom was not happy.

Great idea. I love to see posts from people just enjoying the fun and nostalgia of cards. My wife and daughter were just out of town for a night, leaving me and my son at home. Wish I would've seen this post earlier.
