76 collector's National experience and pickups

Just got back from the National and wanted to post some of my pickups and make some comments about the show. As a few of you may know (I mentioned in a couple of previous posts) I went to the show looking for my white whale. An affordable but decent looking psa graded (with a number) Mantle rookie. I sold off a portion of my collection and saved some money up for the purchase. A couple of observations I had are that I think I actually saw more 52 Topps Mantles than 51 Bowman, strangely enough. Also, I noticed a crazy wide price range for that card. I was looking for a psa 1-3. Anyway, after spending a day walking, getting a couple of auto's and meeting a few board members I left Saturday a bit disappointed with no Mantle and the ones I saw that I liked were out of my price range (707 had a couple but they were too overpriced IMO). So I decided to go back on Sunday and went down an aisle that I hadn't covered on day 1. I found a few more Mantles, and was able to get one in my range, so I was pumped. Here are some pictures.

Little off grade Jeter rookie, I've been missing from my 93 SP set. Scratches are on case, but the right corner nick is real. Still happy with the card

1957 Topps Clemente - One of my favorite cards of him. Probably would grade a 4 or 5. Not high end but fits nicely in my collection. The playing card was a throw in !

Finally, the big addition to my collection. I know it's not much to some, but it's been a long time coming for me, and once again fits into my collection well.

The total haul, minus a couple of jersey cards of Brady that I got for my son. A great time at the National for me. It was awesome meeting some board members, and my only regret was not buying some unopened material. I got so caught up in my quest for the Mantle, that I hardly even looked at the unopened.

Congratulations on some great pickups of super players. Nothing beats spending quality time with your son, doing the things both of you enjoy doing!!!!!!!!!!

Terrific additions to your collection Jeff. Love the shot with you and your son with Rickey. I, too, regret not purchasing some of the unopended wax especially the 79 Cello box.

Glad you didn't give up and found that Mantle. I take one of those in any grade, congrats!!!

It was great meeting you and hopefully we'll be able to chat more next year. But the best is having your son there to share some moments with you. image

Nice items. Id say a 51 Mantle graded 2 is a big deal!

That Henderson RC looks great with the Auto. Huge Henderson fan in my youth

It was nice meeting you on Saturday at Nationals. I know at that time you hadn't had any luck, so I'm glad Sunday turned out to be your day. It's a good reminder that sometimes patience and persistence are the key.

Thanks for the positive words all. I really had a good time at the show, and enjoying it with my son was the primary focus, and then getting the Mick a close 2nd. :-) He kept telling my wife about how he was going with me to "the biggest card show in the whole world !", so it was fun to see his reaction to a lot of the unique stuff there.

Nice synopsis! You forgot the Legos. . It was really nice meeting you and your entire family, I hope you all had a great time. Congrats on landing that Mantle RC, that's a huge card! See ya in Cleveland?

Matt, haha, funny I did forget to mention that my son also got the Cubs lego set. We had a good time putting it together back at the hotel. I have to admit, it was a little bit of a challenge ! Anyway, I will definitely be going to Cleveland next year, as I grew up in the Akron area and still have family there. So, it's a great excuse to go see friends family and enjoy the show.
