'70 and '71 Topps Baseball Wax Packs

Steve just told me that on Sunday someone bought out all of their remaining '70 and '71 Topps baseball wax packs, a total of 15 packs. If anyone knows who purchased the packs please let me know. Thanks.

About $700 in NM grade.

Missed out on the 1976 Topps wax box and now find out that I missed out on 1971 wax. Bummer. If anyone has a 4th series pack, that's what I need. Agree with Grote about roughly $700 for NM. On a good day you might see $900. $1000 is my guess where you will see what brokers refer to as the "resistance level."

I recall in the 90s when the Perfect Card Company was selling packs out of the full boxes for about $300 each. Wish I had bought the whole box!

Topps cut the production levels on wax in 1971, so they tend to be a bit scarcer than other early-70s packs.

Last I checked (2 days ago) the one in the current Huggins and Scott auction was around $3250 with the juice.

They sold one last month around $3k, as did BBCE at National last week.

IIRC, part of the reason for the decline in production of 71 wax packs has to do with lower than expected demand for wax packs in 1970, the year Topps raised the price per pack from a nickel to a dime. Of course, they did increase the number of cards in the pack from 5 to 10, also, but a dime seemed a lot more than a nickel to a young boy in the summer of 1970, lol..

The elevator ride on 70s unopened prices is upon us and we still haven't found a stopping point. 1976 wax is up 10% from last month and could go higher before H&S auction finally closes.

Heck, I was buying mini wax boxes for $800 per a couple months after the REA auctions concluded, lol..I opened 5-6 of them!

There are still some deals out there, though, but they are fewer and farther between...

Is it my imagination or did Topps produce significantly less 1976 than 1975 or 1974? For one, unopened stuff seems non existant. Also if you look at all the HOF's submitted to PSA, there are 2-3 times more 1975's than 1976's. (Rose has less than 1000 1976 and more than 2000 1975's) What gives?

1975 was arguably the most popular set of the 70s, so unopened product is in fact fairly more plentiful than 76. I would not put 74 in that category, however, as cellos and racks from 74 are much tougher to find than from 76, though wax appears a bit more plentiful..

Edit to add: If you are referring to unopened product, that is. As for graded card pops, I have no idea..

Just curious, does anyone know the ratio of 1971 packs to the total bought by one person? For example was it 5 1971 packs and 10 1970 packs. I believe one board member here bought a 1971 wax pack from BBCE at the national.

Yep, I bought one, and if my memory serves me correctly (which these days is not always the case ), there were at least 5 to pick from at that time, including one that had Reggie Jackson on the pack, and a couple that were mislabeled (wrong series), and conditions ranging from PSA 6 (which is what I bought) up to PSA 8 or 8.5.

I believe BBCE was selling the PSA 8 for $850, but again , Im shooting from memory, and I don't remember what series it was. I was satisfied with my 6 so I don't remember details on the rest.

Thanks for the info!! I only need a 5th series 1971 wax pack to have one from each series

And hopefully it wasn't Tim or Manny (just kidding) who picked up the 1971 cellos, I've been the 1970 Cello set award winner for the last 5 years. They might be making me upgrade my pitiful 1972 PSA 5 cello with some red sox OF with a long last name on top.
