Cincyredlegs Observations and Pick-Up's From The Natty

I was at the show from Thursday-Saturday. It was great to see good friends and make a few more. Here is a list of all the CU guys I was able to talk with (sorry if I missed anyone):

CpaMike - Mike
Mbmiller - Matt
Thosebackpages - Eric
Doublestriker - Dustin
DTY - Tyler
Mkenz - Mike
ssolars - Scott
moonlightgraham - Paul
76collector
Mariner - Don
Cardcountry - Jeff and his dad
Hoosierguy - Adam
80'scollector - Nathan
Otwcards - Scott
Flatfoot - Manny
dcanfield - Doug
70stoppsfanatic - Dave
Thunderdan - Dan
Bosox1976 - Mike
Dpeck100 - David
Mrmint23 - Kirk
Stooge - Paul
cadets68 - Shawn

Observations:

-Steve had a ton of stuff. Prices on some stuff was double from the last National but his table was still packed and he sold some high $ items. A lot of un-opened was there that I haven't seen Steve have for a long time.

-It was funny watching dealers having un-opened for sale that was 25% higher than what Steve was selling for.

-Prices were all over the place. Some dealers would work with you on price and others would not. Some dealers would engage in a conversation with you while others literally would not even look up at you from there chair.......LOL. There were some tables (big name guys) that I didn't see ANY traffic.

-The Cracker Jack set-up was quite impressive.

-Was nerve racking watching Scott (ssolars) ripping his 61 FB packs.....has bigger nuts than me......LOL.

-My legs were about shot after day 2.

-Commit to memory for next year, right down the booth number of the stuff you are interested in. There were a few items I didn't get because I couldn't remember where they were. CpaMike and I searched 2 hours for one thing and never found it.

-Very nice to see the amount of kids and families at the show.

-Props to Mbmiller and Thunderdan for giving a few kids there stars from the boxes they busted at Steve's booth.

-The PSA luncheon.......well, er, ah, nevermind, I don't want to get banned.

-The Net54 dinner was great. They had 4 speakers. A couple were OK but the other two were interesting. Plus, free dinner and drinks.

-Was able to attend my first game at Wrigley Field. Beautiful stadium and a great game.........just couldn't cheer for the Cubbies.

-On to the purchases. I honestly didn't get much. Was a bit overwhelmed again. First up is a 71 series 1 wax pack with Reggie Jackson on back (PSA has it mislabeled as a 2nd series pack) that I picked up from Steve (along with an 85 Topps cello box)

A common T206

My first T206 HOF........Mr. Matty. A small pencil mark on the back knocked the grade down but was very happy with the way the front presents

And my first hockey card. I have admired the 54 set for a very long time and wanted to get one.

Can't wait till Cleveland 2014 and seeing everyone that made it this year and the guys that couldn't.

Mark ... real nice Mathewson. Presents real well for the grade. I too would rather have the pencil markings on the back and pay a lot less. Sounds like you had a great time. Good for you.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Nice pickups Mark. Can't wait to go next years National. Glad you had a great time. image

C'mon, you weren't impressed by the new video game?

I was there for dealer set up on Wednesday and again on Friday. No Q and A for Joe at the luncheon, that was always the most interesting. Found 2 cards I needed from my wantlist, so it was a bust in that sense, but sold or consigned a whole bunch of stuff and got to see a lot of old friends. Missed Manny by minutes, after chatting online for 8 years was hoping to finally meet.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Hey Mark,
You showed me the hockey card but you held back those T206's! Very, very nice!!

I love seeing all these National pickup threads. Some fantastic stuff. One of these years I need to make the trip. Last time I went it was in Houston in the 90's I believe.

    Mark,

The Matty has fantastic eye appeal and who really looks at the back of a card anyways? I missed not going this year, but looking forward to Cleveland next year.

LMFAO...........That was the highlight of the lunch. Matt actually blushed and then panicked when he couldn't hit the mute button.

It was great to be along for the ride as you made some of your scores this year. That 1971 Reggie Jackson on back wax pack is off the charts and I'm glad you pulled the trigger on it.

Glad you were able to stay true to your collecting focus as those T-206's were awesome to see in person.
