Keep my 1975 mini box sealed or grade pacs?

Hello everyone. First time posting but have been an avid reader of the forum for many years. My dilema is that my wife bought me a 1975 Topps mini box for my birthday, which was in July. I saw it on BBCE website back in Sept-Oct 2012 and regailed her with my summer of 1975 spent in Holland, Michigan with my cousins and all of the minis that we opened. I thought she was just humoring me and nodding at the appropriate moments but she was actually listening. Go figure. Anyway, we are stopping at the National on Sunday on our way to vacation in the Wisconsin Dells. In the long run, would it be better to keep the box sealed or break the BBCE seal and have the pacs individually graded? Any input is appriciated.

There seems to be a premium for sealed cases over individual packs. I'd say leave it as is

Is it marked as from an unopened case?

If you are planning on opening a few, take the best 20 or so packs and sub them. If not, leep the box intact, imo.

  • Congrats on having such a great wife! I wouldn't EVER touch it, and your box will have a heavy premium attached to it long-term because of the BBCE wrapping. I have opened many boxes and as I stated before...opening a 1975 mini box is like seeing Angelina Jolie, ripping off her clothes and then finding a naked Hillary Clinton staring at you.

Yeah, but if the box happens to be from the right case, you'll find Kate Upton instead!

Well, Doug, I don't think even the most ardent Clinton fan is going to equate Hilary with Raquel Welch. C'mon, now, lol..

I'm pretty sure that Raquel might have also had a few enhancements along the way. Either that, or she has the smoothest 72-year-old skin in history, LOL..

Funny, I was opening my 75's up the road in Grand Haven.

  • Oh the fun Snuffy could have with THIS thread. I must refrain lest I find myself in time out again!

If you aren't sure what to do, keep it sealed. Once you break the seal you can't go back. But you can always choose to grade the packs down the line.

Thanks for all of the input. I think I will leave the box sealed. I did not notice before but it does say it is from an unopened case. I just wish that my other unopened items (1987 topps wax case, 1990 topps hockey vend case, etc.) were in as high demand as this box. I hope BBCE has some items left on Sunday. I need to get some autos of Big Red Machine and then go hang out at their booth and hopefully open some interesting packs. Hope everyone has a good National.

I bought a '75 mini wax box in late 2011 for $1,300. If you want to keep it sealed, never look at it because it will tease, taunt and tantalize you until you rip that bad boy open.

I planned on holding my box for 5 years and then selling but lasted a little less than one and a half. I was then going to open half the packs and grade half. You all know where this is going: I ended up opening 21 packs and grading 15. I did get some really nice cards (love those '75 minis!) and the packs graded really high.

I don't regret opening the box because I know it would still be haunting me if I didn't. Bottom line, if it's an investment, keep it sealed. If you want to enjoy some of the cards, maybe do as grote suggested (and I actually did): rip some and get some packs graded. Have fun!!

    Daniel,
I would have to say that if you still have your 15 graded packs and if they graded all around 8's, that you almost have your box paid for plus all your singles!!
