Huge Break for a card guy!!!! Cards in the basement

My uncle comes to the house this morning to see my newborn... "he says my buddy is in a lot of financial trouble. Hes got about 5000 baseball cards. 30s through the 70s, and he wants a dollar a card. "

My uncle says there is a Ruth and some Mantles for a fact. The only big question is condition... they have been in a box in his basement for over20 years untouched. this is no bullcrap! Getting ready to leave to check them out with 5K in my pocket... wish me luck!

Good luck, but I'd leave the money at home.
  • Heres hoping your Uncle's friend was from New York and collected just 33 Goudeys,52 Topps and 71 Topps(since 70's were mentioned). I hope there are stacks on Ruth's, Mantle's and Munson's.

I think I remember reading that more than half of the 52 Topps High Numbers were released in the Northeast USA and Eastern Canada.

    My prediction:

    1976 ATG Ruth, VG.
    1982 K-Mart Mantle, VG-EX.
    1975 Topps Mantle MVP X 3, EX-MT
    3 1952 Bowman misidentified as 1930s
4,994 1978 Topps EX Condition with 2 Eddie Murrays, both VG-EX
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

If the majority are 30s-60s, I'd hope that if they are in really nice shape w/ a lot of stars that you would give him a little more than $1/card (even if that's what he said he wanted).

I agree about leaving the money behind. Take a look and lots of pictures first and show some here and we can help you with opinions if you want. Doug

Most of the posts here are assuming the guy will actaully have junk to sell, but if your uncle's friend truly does have cards like Mantles and Ruths, I sincerely hope you're not going to rip him off and pay $1 a card.

If he does have cards like that he will need more then luck to purchase them with 5K. So, I am not sure what type of luck he is actually looking for. Good luck could price him out of a find... unless the seller doesn't know what he has and the buyer is willing to take advantage of him. That would be BAD luck for the seller.
  • I got there late... missed the bus! UGH! The guys nephew works at a card shop in Frederick,MD. The shop owner paid exactly what I intended on, the five grand. My Dreams are shattered.

My uncle was very apologetic. After talking to the guy, whom was very nice, they were mostly late 50's partial sets and some duplicates from those years. He said there were 4 Mantles and some Mays and Maris cards for sure. They had been given to him buy an old fella when he was a kid. I tried to track the lot down and found out that "a Sheik with a lot of money had already purchased the lot"... CRAZY. Oh well, I just feel sooo let down right now. Yesterday was a rollercoaster.

I wonder if it was the Iron Sheik??? lol

And if anyone believes this I have a bridge or two that I want to sell you!image
  • You don't have to believe it, I make up stories all the time...just for fun, ya know?

I live for finds like this... that's how it started for me. My other uncle ( who owned the antique shop) sold me a huge lot for 200 bucks... A bunch of high dollar Mars Attacks... and some great vintage baseball. That's a lie too.

I don't blame you for being skeptical, crap like this is rare... I don't have proof now and that's part of why I'm soo upset.

Maybe that's karma for trying to give him only $1 a card when are told ahead of time that he has a ruth and some mantles.

The part I don't understand about this story was where the OP was going to take $5000 cash on a bus.

    That would be odd... image

If that's the case, use the 5k to buy a car

    Or shoes without laces.
  • Yea it's funny... I have been dwelling on this B.S. for the last couple days non stop. I don't think I will ever have a chance for a pickup like that again.

The guy knew he had some cards of great value but hes not internet savey and is going through a lot of crap, He needs to get out of his current home and just didn't care. I have a family to support and 5k was my max I could come up with at the time.

And to the guy selling the bridge... I don't have a newborn, my uncle is a hologram, I withdrew monopoly money from the game under my bed, I didnt waist half the day stressing my wife out over the whole deal, then I didn't go to west virginia to a disabled vets basement whos house is getting forclosed on. His P.O.S. nephew didn't take the motherload to a card shop. It's all an elaborate tale of woe, that never happened. You got me.
