Fake 1/4 oz. Pandas

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,109 ✭✭✭✭✭
A Florida dealer on my old dealer-to-dealer network made the following posting:

"Beware of some struck 1/4 ounce gold pandas that are counterfeit!!!!!!!!!!!
The ones I saw are dated 1984 and 1986
They weigh right
They however are thicker than normal
They have white metal inside and dont test as gold
Some are in hard panda plastics so take them out and check thickness
They are struck and look good as the real ones
The ones I saw (5) came out of Palm Beach County"

Always be super cautious when buying raw PM's....the market is loaded with counterfeits and fakes.... Cheers, RickO

........and on that note, Bloomberg recently reported that the "well-to-do" Chinese were buying their luxury goods overseas because of "local" counterfeits. They won't even buy high-end stuff in HK.....go figure?

One of the advantages of buying from a market leader (there are many good ones) or at a good B&M (and there are some lousy ones) vs. buying from a stranger on the internet.

know the product you are buying and try to buy from a reputable seller. the side affect of known counterfeits is "what affect will it have on us that sell good products down the road?" Buyers will become more leary of all products.

It's getting to the point where I wont even consider an item that is sealed. That seems to be pretty much all alibaba sells, so that's my simple man approach to it, at this point.
