1958 Jefferson Nickel Error? Pictures included Question

I have a 1958 Jefferson Nickel that weighs 3.04 Grams. The obverse looks similar to a grease filled die but the reverse is a good strike. The coins like I siad weighs almost 2 grams light. Could this be a Jefferson nickel struck on a foreign planchet? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

rolls, and I really gave much thought to them, just thought quality
control was lacking that year, that one looks like an acid experiment

  • I see there is consensus on this but I have seen many acid batch coins and there is usually some pitting from the acid. IN addition the reverse does not show any damage and 2 grams to come off the obverse alone is a lot of acid I would expect more damage to the Jefferson relief.

Take a nickel and pour just enough nitric acid into a petri dish so it does not cover the nickel. Cohesion will keep the acid off the exposed area, adhesion will allow the acid to eat at the submerged portion, even taking away from the exposed rim. It even has that trapped gas effect of flow from the center outward...yes, acid etched.

As the aforementioned experts so succinctly put it...acid treated without a doubt.
