A Special Project Between a Father and Son

This is semi off topic, but I hope everyone will allow me to share a special project I have engaged in with my son, Jake. I've been around long enough that many of you know my history of collecting, etc. Well last year I decided to sell off most of my collection as I wanted to redistribute the money into family things. My two boys (7 and 8) didn't have any interest in cards for the most part as my youngest Travis, likes (swimming/electronics) and my oldest Jake, likes (hunting/fishing/being in the woods). Well as I got down to the end of selling, I was left with my most special cards. I had always told my oldest that those cards would be his. Fast forward, and after I sold the cards, my oldest Jake starts asking to see his cards. I put him off for a while, until I ultimately let him know that I sold the cards he was asking me to see. He was very very upset with me. It really hurt as I felt I had let him down! So......as a way to move on, he and I decided to work on something together that we could both get involved in and enjoy. Jake knew as most on CU know that I love Stan Musial. I love him for the player he was, but I equally love him for the person that he was. If you read about Stan Musial, and the way he lived his life, you can't help but want to be a better human being, and live life the way Stan Musial lived his.

Before I can move forward with this story, I have to say A HUGE THANK-YOU to Dave Kleppel (70ToppsCollector), as without his willingness to sell me back many of the cards I had sold him, this wouldn't be possible.

So as a way to honor Stan Musial and to try and educate others as to who and what Stan Musial is all about, we created the following website: Stan Musial Museum

Neither Jake nor I have any experience at building a website. So please keep that in mind before commenting. This is really our attempt at letting people know about Stan Musial, the player and more importantly the person.

We have alot of work to do on the site, as there are many more pages involving Stan outside the Ballpark that we want to add, but I wanted to share our start with the CU community. I have had alot of fun with this to date. Jake is always coming up with new ideas, and many of the subtle quotes and such are items that Jake has suggested. Most importantly, its been something that Jake and I have gotten to do together. He seems to enjoy it, and I LOVE IT!

Matt, you hit it out of the park. I love the site and am looking forward to checking in frequently. Your write-ups were great and I like the layout of the website.

Best of luck to you and Jake on your journey!!!

That is an amazing project on so many levels-- the subject matter is so worthy: that is a player, like others of yesteryear, whose legacy needs to be kept in the minds of younger people today. The design I found very pleasing and tasteful. The cards look awesome. Then the father/son component takes it to a whole other level. Inspiring and hope to do something akin to it with my kids when old enough. Congrats, brother and keep up the fine work!

  • I was extremely impressed with your site. Especially with you mentioning that you guys don't have experience creating one. It's very nice and user friendly. I'm sure you'll fine other things to add on to it in the near future. 2 thumbs up on this one.

  • Hi Matt,

That is awesome. You and I have spoken and done deals together. So you know I collect with my 12 year old son. We started when he was 7 years old. I am so happy for you that atleast one of the boys decided to enjoy this with you. I don't care how much you enjoyed it before, but it won't hold a candle to the enjoyment you have ahead of you.

Thanks for the comments guys, Jake took particular interest in this thread today, and got a kick out of reading everyone's comments. image
  • Matt, the website is spectacular - and what a great project to do with your son. I suspect it will increase his interest in cards, spark his interest in web development and problem solving, and most importantly, allow him to learn more and more on his own as to how Stan Musial lived his life (and thus look to him as a role model).

    I'm a fan!

    Great job Matt,

I'm excited to see you back and collecting, especially with your kids. I have a 5 and 2 1/2 year old that both love playing sports, but are too young to enjoy collecting YET.

Would you have any suggestions for a children's book about Stan?

    Thanks Again Guys,

Dan, I think I need to just give you the password and username because I have no idea about "code" as you know from our conversation.

Paul, I am not aware of any children's Musial books. Jake personally likes "Stan the Man" buts that because of the pictures. He really got most of his information from the internet. He got super excited when he came across a picture of Stan Musial and Jackie Robinson, as he is familiar with Jackie Robinson from a report he did on him in February this year for Black History Month.

Nathan, Hoping to find a key card or two to add to my Musial collection for sure.

  • Awesome Matt!!
