Why are the 1999 and 1999-D Susan B Anthony dollar prices suddenly rising fast and furious?

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭✭
I noticed on the grey sheets that the 1999 and 1999-D issues of the SBA dollars have DOUBLED from $2 each to $4 from January 2013 to now.

All other issues have not moved at all.

Anyone privy to as why?

Someone taking a large position in these for a special promotion?
Some special anniversary that I do not know about?

    LOL.

Actually I have a US Mint bag of 1999 SBA's I bought at face value back in 1999 and saved it and it did nothing for 13-14 years.

I was perusing the entire grey sheet for once to see the effect of declining gold and silver prices on collector type coin prices.

I also noticed rising washington quarter roll prices dated in the 1940's and early 1950's as they see to be re-asserting themselves in general versus the bullion priced rolls.

Also noticed franklin half roll prices have been largely immune from the silver price drop. Was that an oversight or reality?

I still have my 1999 SBA proof and SBA mint sets. Been waiting for them to take off. I know the proofs did a few years ago, but I got sidetracked and never sold them.

Where have all the Susies disappeared?

Over 800 million were struck in 1979-80 (the 1981 issues were released only in mint/proof sets). By 1999 the government stockpile of these coins was exhausted, hence the production of a small quantity of 1999 Susies to fill public demand prior to the introduction of the 2000 Sacs. So where are these 800 million Susies today?

The 1999-D SBA (mintage 11,776,000) went up first, and over the past couple of weeks the 1999-P (mintage 29,592,000) has followed. These coins were not included in the mint sets, and were struck to supply post offices and transit companies with a supply of dollar coins until the new Sacagawea dollars became available in 2000. I suspect that many of the coins went directly to post offices, whose stamp vending machines gave change in dollar coins. I remember going to my neighborhood post office to buy stamps, and receiving nothing but 1999-D dollar coins in change. I made a lot of visits to the post office that summer and fall, sometimes using a $20 bill to buy one stamp, and receiving 19 new dollar coins each time. I accumulated about 250 of them, expecting them to increase in price someday.

I used to think the 1999-P proof SBA might be another possible sleeper, as it wasn't included in the proof sets, and "only" 750,000 were sold, which was lower than the 1999 silver proof sets that once sold for over $300. Recent mintages for gold commemoratives and first spouse coins make 750,000 seem like a huge mintage.

I kinda keep an eye on OBW rolls on e-Bay, especially the few non '63 rolls that look original. I haven't seen any major drop in prices there. Other OBWs (dimes & quarters) seem to be holding up well also . . . much to my chagrin ! ! ! image

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Yep. I paid $45 for a Suzie for my type set. It was harder to do that than spend $1k on a nice classic coin.

I still really like the MS65 Wide Rim SBAs. A great value!

In the area of $4 EACH? Geez, I need to find a buyer then.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

...coincidentally, the latest CW issue speaks of the SBA small bucks and near date verses far date 79's. image just saw it on the online site.

I got a 99 in with the rest of the dollar coins the train ticket machine spit out. It struck me as very odd and probably one on the rarest circulating coins of recent vintage out there. They are still ugly.

I received a '99 SBA in change from a hospital parking ramp machine about a week ago. It sure stuck out among the other dollar coins. I thought it was a quarter at first. Funny thing is, I remember erroneously getting SBA's in change as quarters back when they first came out. Common problem with these back then.
