Wary of Ebay stories

I mean this as no disrespect to anyone here specifically, but can we please stop all the Ebay drama posts in this forum? I understand that when some of you have problems on Ebay that you believe you're helping the community here by informing us in painstaking detail of how your transaction went down....However this forum is supposed to be about Cards and Memorabilia.

If the main subject of your post is about an Ebay transaction, I just don't think it belongs here. Also, if its just 1 or 2 a week, it would be different. But I feel like half the stories on the forum are about Sales Gone Wrong and not about cards. Perhaps we need another Forum for Ebay operational issues. Just my .02.

actually, there used to be A LOT of threads and posts about things that went so right with Ebay. our community was buzzing with excitement over cool auctions, buying and selling.

the sad truth is what you see currently is a reflection of just how poor it has become and some of the stand-up guys in this community are dealing with too much BS to feel any measure of satisfaction being a salesperson.

others are feeling the sting of sour experiences while simply trying to support their own passion.

yeah, it's a rut we're in. i hope there's more positive here soon.

And the half about cards are about a certain 'sport' which PSA technically classifies as a Non Sport, and there's a forum for that already.

Ebay forum is way overdue, even if they just call it an auction forum. I think it has value but agree it needs it's own home.
  • I would agree, but in my case I feel that people need a heads up. Whether we want to admit it or not, eBay is a big factor in most of our collecting and someone like me who has 3500+ feedback and strives to be perfect getting abusive emails is not right and could affect my sales. This type of stuff needs outed. I agree that more bad eBay posts should be condensed to one thread. Perhaps there should be something started in B/S/T or even here with eBay threads. IMO eBay has alot to do with our hobby and transactions that affect people on this forum. Just my .02.

I won an auction this week for a great price. Surprisingly, the seller can't find the card to send to me, and refunded my $$. Should I out the seller, leave negative, neutral, or no feedback?

Agreed Jason. And my post wasn't directed toward you at all. I enjoyed reading your thread and find value in that information. I really just wanted to emphasize the need for a new thread that may encompass issues related to Ebay dispute settlement + paypal issues + BBL+ issues with the Post Office etc. Perhaps the other thread could be geared toward Seller's Interests.

Ebay has been dead for years IMO.

It seems very, very, very unreliable in terms of information, being able to do things. From getting rid of wild card searches? Stupid.

Someone gave a tip awhile ago about being able to look at best offer prices if you type in .ca, instead of .com? Now that doesn't work anymore. Less information about completed auctions, if any. They seem to give you less, and less information as time goes on.

Speaking for myself since I posted my first and so far only ebay negative story earlier today I would agree with the poster to a point. I understand you obviously do not like reading them and do not like to see them in this forum.

But at the same time up until today my own personal blocked list on ebay had been made up entirely from the stories I had read on here. I find great use in such stories, and after my own recent trouble I am more thankful than ever that I have read such stories. While I agree this may not exactly be the place for them I hope to keep reading them until there is a better one.

Sorry... No positives yet. I have one more no-good-nick to report. Unfortunately, we need to block this guy too! Look at him! eBay's biggest evil-doer!

But seriously, (did I really just say that?). It seems like we have had repository threads of both the good and the bad here, but, they inevitably get out of hand and go POOF!. Tonight was a particularly bad nigh with a few of these posts on the front page. When I saw them all I just figured they were spoof threads until I had a peek. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes you have to just let some people vent to get over it. And occasionally there is one of these threads that everyone can learn from. Now that I have actually talked in circles and added nothing of substance to this thread, I will exit stage left.

P.S. I would like to add my .02 to the .02 cents of mcadams:

<<Perhaps we need another Forum for Ebay operational issues. Just my .02. >>

Now if someone will just add one more cent we will be up to a nickle and perhaps they will add a new forum section to the website!

Why not just let people post what they want and choose whether or not to read it or respond?

When 50% of the threads aren't about sports cards or memorabilia, it dilutes the value of the forum. That's why. There is a reason that online message boards have categories. But for some reason, some people use the "Sports Cards & Memorabilia" forum for every single discussion topic.

Agreed, a separate forum to discuss all auctions.

The problem with a forum titled "sportcards and memorabilia" is that it is so general that almost any topic in the hobby can be put there.

Also agree that eBay has gone way downhill in the last 10 years. I find people's bad experiences there helpful to me at times, but yes all the negativity is a downer.

But it is about sports cards and memorabilia....the purchase of sports cards and memorabilia. About the only thing I agree with from your post is that we need to create one thread and everyone post their horror stories there. Other than that, you're wrong on the fact that these posts don't belong here.

Maybe there could be one EBay thread and everyone could post there. Call it EBay the Good the Bad and the Ugly or something along those lines. I think its good to out bad sellers and stuff so others can avoid them but it may be nice to have them all in one thread.

true. including those topics which relate specifically to personal issues and have absolutely nothing to do with cards. but, some folks are afforded a free pass to post such things, because.........

when you shake it all down, we are still a COMMUNITY, and when something occurs which involves one of our esteemed members, others will rally around them and offer support.

so, without the added aspect of topics which may not be exactly about cards, but do affect people who regularly buy/sell/collect, it's just a forum about that for which it is titled.

this forum DOES have a personality all its own, and the mods have plenty to worry about just figuring out what belongs. i don't envy that as a form of adult babysitting, but it is what we got.

It's also called the community forum...
    Good for you.
  • I could be wrong, but, I do not think people are suggesting that these types of posts should not be made. I think the consensus is that the threads are very beneficial on many levels, even if the outcome is to just let someone vent off some hobby related steam! I think the argument being made is that the website should be better organized which in and of itself is just another thread that is letting someone/people vent, because the website is not going to get an update for that purpose. So in the end we have people venting and people venting about people venting. Hopefully, everyone can let off some steam and make more room internally for enjoyment of the hobby.
  • I personally don't mind the eBay stories because it has helped me out in the past when I recently encountered a problem of my own with a seller and because of past threads, I knew exactly how to handle the situation and got my money back. The ones that really annoy me are the "who the best player" or "who has the best record...". The ones that have absolutely nothing to do with sports cards. I honestly don't mind when one pops up here and there but when you have the same people do those threads over and over because they think creating a lot of threads and hopefully generating a lot of comments makes them popular or something, well I have an issue with those who abuse it and we certainly have guys like that around here.

While I can see the OP's side, I don't necessarily agree with it at this time. This is becaus there is no 'ebay' or 'auction site' forum.

The way I look at it is this is a community. It goes back to the stories of peoples lives, families, and other personal things. I "enjoy" reading about all of it, and if there is something that doesn't interest me, I just move on.

I think the ebay stories are needed to warn others about deadbeats and possible scams in the hobby. If if it's here because there is no dedicated forum, so be it.

Posting a topic complaining about something is just adding to the clutter that you are railing against. I'm not complaining about you, it just doesn't make sense to me.

Remember, we are all human here, not card collecting robots. I like to see the collector's side sometimes, not just the collections.

  • Agree with the OP, these posts are getting out of hand, as is all the belly aching about how terrible Ebay is.

Most of these posts start with how the seller has 10 million successful transactions and finally one has gone wrong. And in most cases what's gone wrong isn't something that horrible, at worst accepting a card back or refunding a bit of shipping or god forbid negative feedback. Another common thread in these posts if the seller making a mistake during the transaction and the belief that any mistake on the sellers part moves the responsibility to the buyer to work with the seller on resolution, and if they don't we should all block them.

So according to the OP people aren't aloud to vent about sportscard related issues they have on ebay in the sportscard forum but he's allowed to vent about whatever he wants?

My word. Perhaps we need a "hypocrit forum" for threads like this!

  • This is the most popular forum dealing with sportscards on this site. Anything that serves as a warning about counterfeits, trimming, bait and switches etc. should be posted here.

If we do away with the ebay tale of woe threads, the topics that belong in the sports talk forum, and the complaining about those threads threads this place would be about as lively as the SGC forum. BTW it seems to me those threads are easily identified by their titles and it is an easy thing to simply skip them.
