One Craigslist lot leads to another

Felt like I was an episode of American Pickers this morning

I call on an ad in Craigslist this morning for a "suitcase full of old stamp albums and stamps - $125 firm" One of the pics showed an album from the 1800s so I figured since it was only 20 minutes or so away, I'd go take a look. Tons of great stuff in there so I bought it for the asking price. Gonna take a month to go through all of it - lots of early nice issues in there. $125 was a smoking deal from what i quickly looked at.

The guy buys storage lots and stuff and then just flips it

So I casually mention that if he ever comes across cards to let me know. He had cards.

We climb over a bunch of stuff in a barn to get from them. I had $11 left in my pocket and that good enough for him.

Here's a couple of quick pics after getting started on them

Yup, all this for $11

Just started going through each bag - all sorted into teams, sports, non-sports (there's star wars, kiss and superman in 1 bag along with some wrestling)

Pains me to see all the 85 Football in rubber bands though - for some reason, the only cards banded are the 85 football

I've only gone through some of the baseball so far have pulled out:

about 100 73 baseball
3 or 4 68 baseball commons
3 Tony Gwynn rookies
1 Boggs rookie
1 Clemens rookie

There are only a few 86s. Everything else is older. Conditions vary from creased to mint but I don't really care. I'll be sorting for the rest of the weekend.

I'll post more findings from this later.

Whoever had those cards did not seem like a real collector. I know you bought them off a flipper, so I doubt he had anything to do with organizing them (or am I wrong?).

Putting the cards in bags like this seems very naive or novice. They probably have not been picked through, which is a plus side.

The condition seems compromised on these mass produced cards, so I wonder if there is any real value in the rookie cards you may find. For $11 perhaps its worth the fun and risk as you put it.

Let us know if there are any other great cards. Thanks for sharing!

You didn't show the Baggie full of gum (DON'T EAT).

I think you got some pretty good value for only $11. I scoured CL this morning but everything was modern junk wax. One guy had about 1000 junk baseball cards that he was valuing at $1 each. He'd take $800 for the lot, though. I felt like asking him if I could move that decimal all the way to the left.

would the zip lock baggies work as wrappers?

Finished the first run through to pull any stars and oldies.

Probably close to 200 73s - most VG+ condition - surprised at that - hopefully some will upgrade my set as I know I've got some beaters in mine.
    10 68s - poor condition
not many between 74 and 80 - just about every 77 was beat to death

The guy i bought them from told me he was the one that sorted into teams and put in the baggies

    Here are the highlights:

and 2 possibly autographed cards - the Red Sox card signed by Jurak and Ed Yost? Never seen a Garvey auto so I'll have to look into that

Don't think I could have found a better way to spend $11 on a Saturday morning. Guess I could have washed my car instead

You walked away from a craigslist transaction in a barn with all of your orgins still inside your body, so I'd say you did just fine.

    Edited to add: Hi Mike.

Hi Mike what does the hockey look like?

    As TNP777 mentioned,

There are a lot of cards on Craigslist from non-collectors who think what they have is worth a lot because they heard somewhere that baseball cards are worth a lot of money without knowing the proper context around it.

1000 cards for $800? He just does not understand that a card's condition is very important and the year of issue also, let alone the players.

There was one of these characters who was a non-collector who ran into a bunch of vintage cards. He was real smart and invested in a price guide. He wrote all the prices on the corner of each card and tried to sell them to dealers at a show. image

    Hey George

Not much star power in the hockey - couple Lafleurs, Trottiers and some minor stars. Condition good-vg on most - few better, few worse

Same with the Basketball - Got a 79 Bill Walton, 76 Nate Archibald and 79 Parish

1 way OC, corners slightly dinged on all 3

Cool with me though. I lived in Madrid from 1982-1985 so I didn't get to see any of those cards back then - and certainly didn't care about cards at that point (I was 15-18 at the time). These are the first Gwynn and Boggs rookies I've ever had.

Garvey auto doesn't look good from here...

Actually, I looked on Ebay after that post and there are a few PSA/DNA that look just like it from that time frame. He even signed other 85s in the same direction. I think it's good. I don't think these cards had been touched by a collector since 1986 either. Not till the storage lot guy "sorted" them

    The Garvey is 100% authentic

These are two of the guys whose signatures I know best - Garvey was my favorite player as a kid, and I have dozens of his autographs obtained over decades. Jurak is a family friend.

The Garvey card looks like an unrushed signature from the late '80s (his style has changed over the years). The Jurak card is not signed by Ed Yost. Jurak signed it in the crisp pen signature in the lower right, and someone (probably a kid who owned the card) decided to write his name on the card as well in the upper center.

I don't think the Jurak card is signed by either of them. The Yost auto doesn't look like any I've found - The E and the Y are both different and Jurak always signed his auto "Eddie" so that card is going in the trash.

The Garvey is 100% authentic I believe and signed before 1987. Not a single card in this lot is from after 86 and it appears this collection was stopped around then so I doubt someone would have pulled one card out after that, have it signed and then put it back. There are quite a few 84 and 85 Garveys signed the exact same way and I even found a few 85s where he signed it just like mine and even in the same sideways direction on the sleeve so that one is a keeper.

Would have been a little bit nicer if the seller of the lot (the guy who bought it in a storage lot) would have left is unsorted and not sorted by team. That way, the original collection could have been looked through the way he collected it.

Wouldn't surprise me if there's another auto or 2 in there somewhere that I missed during my first run through. I'll sort these into years and get a better look one of these days.

    Great find for the money!

That's not an Ed Yost signature, and there would have been no reason for him to be signing that card - he had retired as a Red Sox coach in 1984. Jurak did not always sign "Eddie" - most of his signatures were that way, but some are just signed "Ed" - especially common on team-signed balls.

Went through the cards again this afternoon mainly to pull the rest of the pre-80 stuff and found another Garvey and 2 more "auto'd" Red Sox cards. 1 with a kid scribble and one the kid left alone. I can't find another Boyd auto that looks even close though.
