New ebay scam got me for $700....UPDATE

This is a head scratcher.

1. Bought a card for $700 next day seller sends it out with tracking.
2. Tracking shows card was sent to wrong address and was returned to the seller a week later (my address is confirmed threw PayPal so the seller must have edited it in eBay shipping).
3. After three weeks passed and no card I opened a case but lost because I did not provide a correct address even though I have bought thousand of cards with no address issues.

This has me really freaked out because a seller can have no proof of delivery only attempted delivery to a wrong address and still win a not received case. I called eBay to double check and they said yes because I did not sign for or receive the card and it was sent back to the seller they did there job and can keep both the card and the $.

Something doesn't sound right. The card was over $250. You have to sign for cards over $250 in value. You never signed for the card. I must be missing something. Contact your credit card company.

Was paid threw PayPal. This is no joke the only tracking number provided by the seller shows it never made it to me and was never signed for and I STILL LOST! I am really freaking out about buying anything on there again.

    1. Call ebay and/or paypal and talk to a supervisor

    2. Out the seller here

    3.

<< <i>After three weeks passed and no card I opened a case but lost because I did not provide a correct address >>

This, I do not understand. Seller should be made to PROVE it was sent to YOUR CONFIRMED address. Make the supervisor prove to you that this was done by the seller through a scan. The card you bought was scanned, so there should be no issue in them obtaining it, if it does exsist. If no satisfactory outcome, tell them your next calls will be to the San Jose Better Business Bureau, and your local media "watchdog". The threat of MAJOR bad press should get you your refund if you have truly done nothing wrong.

BTW, if you funded the purchase with a credit card, you can always give them a call too. They will deal with Paypal etc. when you give them the details. Just make sure you have everything written out to refer to when you are on the phone. Stay calm, state the facts, and you should at least get your $$ back.

BUT, follow #2 here ASAP. If there is a scam happening there are people here who can stop it in their tracks until it is outed.

What if they cut out one of the numbers to my PO box on the shipping lable label or colored over it with a sharpie so the package would get to my city but not my box and then be returned to them? I'm telling you this was planned all along and with eBay B.S. policy I bet it's gonna happen more and there's nothing anyone can do.

Have you talke to a paypal rep on the phone yet?
What exactly did they say? You can appeal it.

You paypal and ebay shipping address is the same PO Box number? Contact your local Post Office and maybe they can reach the local post office the seller used and look at package in person.

If the item is sent back as undeliverable by the post office, the buyer wins with PayPal as soon as the item shows as being returned to the seller. This happens even when the buyer is a total moron and doesn't bother to change his PayPal address after he moves.

Something has gone very wrong here. You need to be speaking to a PayPal supervisor ASAP.

Sold a $350.00 graded card a few weeks ago. The seller was not happy with the grade from Beckett.

    I said no problem.

Well he sent it UPS ground with NO SIGNATURE REQUIRED and put the wrong address on it. It was left at some front door of somebody else.

Fast forward a few days after I escalate the case and explain what he has done. His tracking only showed my city. However, in the messages he stated the wrong address he sent it to when I am asking where the darn card is at.

    Ebay ruled in his favor.

So the guy had nobody sign for it, mailed it to the wrong address and got his money back.

I called ebay and appealed the case and explained the situation and they reversed it. Ebay paid me out of their own pocket and let the guy keep his money.

For the record, the only reason ebay gave me money was because he stated the mistake in the messages. If he hadn't I would have lost the card/money.

Ebay really makes it a PIA to work with them.

If the Seller did not send it to your confirmed PP address and did not get your signature, yet it was returned to him, the Buyer protection system failed miserably. As others have suggested, contact a PP supervisor immediately. Unless we're missing part of the story, PP should reverse the decision and return your $700.

Based on what you've written, there is no way they would rule in favor of seller so you need to talk to a supervisor asap.

Something similiar happened to me, I opened a Paypal case and within 3 weeks, they ruled in my favor. Remember, the seller needs to provide proof he mailed it to your address. And, if the tracking states it was returned to customer, then the customer has two options
    1. mail it back
    2. keep the card and refund the money

About the worst case scenario here should be that you're charged again for shipping.
  • In addition to contacting paypal, i would send another message to the seller letting him know that he stole $700 which is considered a felony and if he does not refund you your money or reship the card, you will contact his local PD and file a report

Maybe he printed out the shipping label correctly and then made an intentional incorrect edit with a pen on the address after it was printed? Not sure if it would still go to the correct address despite that if the scan barcode gets them there anyway?

As already mentioned, if you can't get a eBay/paypal supervisor to help you go immediately to your credit card company. They will make paypal reconsider its position as this may not be the only case of this happening.

The USPS tracking number doesn't show it returned yet to the seller. When we get undeliverable signature confirmation or certified mail etc, we have to return it to the sender, and they have to sign to get it back. We scan that signature.

Tracking doesn't show that scan as ever done.

I'll check tomorrow at work to see if it had insurance. Might not be completely the seller's fault here.

Honestly, the only way this will turn out to be a successful scam is if you let it happen. You need to have somebody at Paypal or eBay show you proof of delivery with your signature. If they cannot and will not provide that, I suggest you let Paypal know you will be contacting your credit card company. If they STILL do not rule in your favor, and everything you are saying here is true, then call your credit card company immediately and state your case. They will automatically credit your account back the $700 while they investigate. You can easily win this. Put in a frickin' throat lozenge and fight this!

I guess it's all who you talk to at ebay because when I called to explain that the post office told me that the card was returned to the seller they could not have been more than helpful and reversed the case in my favor! Last night and this morning all I got was sorry there is nothing we can do. On top of all of this a card I sold last Friday for $1,800 was shipped with tracking and insurance but never got scanned during the whole delivery process! Thank god the buyer was honest and said that they received the card! What is up with USPS?image

Always take insured items (I take anything over $50) to the USPS to be "scanned as accepted." It's the only way to insure and prove that the package is in the hands of USPS. If an insured item is not scanned, you cannot make a claim...learned the hard way.

Just the hassle of this alone is why I use Rick and Brent to sell my cards. So what if I am out an extra 5% max! I don't have worry about this kind of stuff, going to USPS, packing supplies, etc. With that being said, I am glad it worked out for you in the end.

There are way to many people that handled your $1800 card for it not to be scanned at some point. 4- 5 people handled that card and not one scanned it? Not possible. The receiving clerk or carrier, maybe processing clerk who loads truck, distribution center that receives it, the clerk at recipients office and the carrier who delivers it. Maybe you need ink in your printer?

I'm glad there's a happy ending here. I've never trusted Paypal. Assuming you are in the right (which you were in this case) you have to be super duper aggressive with them sometimes and they'll usually see the light.

And my experience with paypal has been great. Another member on this board encouraged me to fight a case where I got took $550 for a Heritage case. It was purchased as a pre-order about 100 days before delivery. Of course one has to make a claim for paypal within 30 days if I remember correctly. Just the fact that the seller put the phrase "preorder" in the title entitled me to get a refund and overlooked the time frame. The folks here on this board are very knowledgeable and helpful. Glad you got it worked out.

tbh this is on you. never pay over $20 to send priority mail, you could've gotten express mail with insurance for cheaper. would've cost around $18 if you printed off ebay.

I couldn't get near the computer today at work, but from looking at the scans I think it looks like you want to call the USPS office in Rochester, and see if they still have it. For some reason it got intercepted on it's way back to the sender.

That usually means it was read by a computer and not a person, and it was sent back towards you. If that was the case, it should have another arrival scan at Rochester.

If you got your refund from paypal, maybe call the Rochester USPS. If it's sitting on the shelf it would be nice to at least have them send it back to the right place.

Sorry I couldn't get on, I'll try again tomorrow!

I take everything to the post office. And because I opened up a postal box, I have to pick up my packages there as well----nothing for a carrier to screw up. Its about as "win win" as you can get at the PO in both directions.
Glad you got it resolved but in the future get your credit card company involved. When I did this, Paypal CONTACTED ME, and asked why I wasn't using the Resolution center to correct things instead of going outside to the credit card company. I had already had and Paypal was as useful as teats on a bull.....I politely told them to F'off and the credit card refunded my money for a forged autograph.
