You have $300. What 1 card is a good investment?

If you had only $300, what 1 card would you purchase today that you could see as having potential for money growth in the future - say ...5 years from now?

Me, I already own one but I would have to say Rickey Hendersons rookie in a 9. That card has had more ups and down than Lindsay Lohan. One week that card will sell for 275 and the next 350-399 buy it now. Seems like that's a good card to own seeing how most will never own a 10 yet even see one in person since only about 11 exist so a 9 seems like there is going to be a lot of demand as the future continues. That and its his only rookie card.

I always thought a centered 1968 Johnny Bench PSA 8 is a undervalued card. You can get it for under $300.

I'd buy a 1986 Jerry Rice rookie in PSA 9, and with the remaining $50 I'd buy an 8 of the same card.

I would get a PSA 10 1988 Topps Football Bo Jackson Rookie. Because he was such an amazing athlete and his popularity seems to grow every year. A great investment

I think buying anything that's value is dependent on its TPG grade is a really bad idea. With $300 I'd buy the rarest card I could find; either an oddball vintage test issue or something like a star/rookie from one of the more collectible late '90s insert/parallel sets (Donruss Crusade, Metal Gems, etc.). Whatever you do, make sure you're buying a card that's worth $300, and not a piece of plastic that's worth $300.

1958 Sonny Jurgensen PSA 8 rookie
    1958 Bart Starr PSA 8 2nd year
    1972 Dr. J PSA 8 Rookie
1969 John Havlicek PSA 8 rookie
1966 Joe Namath PSA 8, 2nd year, although it might be tough to find an 8 at this price

I think all of these are safe picks and have solid upside demand in the future.

I hate to say it but certified 1975-1979 Un-Opened packs.

I'm not a pack guy, but these will do very well.

There are tons of good vintage options, more than you could list. Besides those, I would consider getting the following:

2005 Upper Deck #201 Sidney Crosby young guns in a BGS 9.5 that I could crossover to a PSA 10

I can't believe I am saying this right now but 1986 Topps baseball unopened. Ten years ago I would have torn a guy a new one if they even mentioned anything above 1975. Boy how things can and will change. Something in my gut tells me that the 1986 Topps is going to be a very big sleeper down the road and the box prices have risen around 55% over the past three years. It is very inexpensive compared to other years in the 80's and to find a PSa 10 is not that easy. A five year investment of this will yield you a great return.

I would try to buy any early cassius clay clay cards. He is as popular as Jordan and Ruth but his cards are not nearly as popular. These would be my top 5 choices since they all could be in the rookie card discussion. The biggest issue with his cards is that there is no clear cut "THE card" to own and awareness...

1960 Hemmets - hand cut but first "card" that psa will grade
1964 Simmon Chocolates - First card that psa grades that isn't hand cut. It's part of a numbered set and was issued with candy. I personally don't like the card because its oversized but its his first true card

1965 Sweedish Candy (I believe this is mis labeled and actually from Holland) - I don't know a ton about this card and can't really make a good argument for it as a rookie card.. Nuts his best looking early card IMO

1965 Lampo Cassius Clay - first card produced that was pack issued. The lampo cards were issued in packets similar to panini and meant to be stuck into albums. The card is fairly difficult to find and most resembles a traditional card.

1966 Panini - not that rare but is the first card produced by a major manufacture. While its not rare compare to his other early cards its scarce compared to 86 fleer Jordan

The other option would be Star rookie cards like 1984 Barkley ect... IF psa ever graded these I think there would be a huge spike prices.. That's a huge "if" though.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say I agree with this. I was buying '86 rak cases for nothing 2 years ago and now they're tough to find. It is a really tough set to get 10's with those damn black borders and crappy surfaces. It's a really nostalgic set for a lot of people and really almost comical to think it would ever be desirable. I despised '86 Topps as a kid, mainly because there was no big rookie, but now I tend to be drawn to this black sheep.

I can't believe I just put in writing that I like '86 Topps.

    This.

But to add: Pick a top non-pitcher baseball prospect (Taveras, Myers etc.) or someone like Machado who has a lot of room to grow. Or a recent draft pick like Austin Meadows who has Bowman Chrome cards already. Just make sure their position isn't blocked or will be blocked (i.e.--don't make the mistake I made and load up on Dan Vogelbach rookies only to have Anthony Rizzo learn how to somewhat hit and sign a 7 year contract.)

    << <i>I'd buy a 1986 Jerry Rice rookie in PSA 9... >>

With the way the Montana RC has skyrocketed in 9, the Rice can't be too far behind. With him being the hands-down best WR ever and there being nearly half the amount of 9s (in a severely condition sensitive set) as the Montana, it's due for a major increase.

I would think a PSA graded pack of 1986 Fleer would be a good investment. I also think the 2 Jordan Star Co. cards #195 and #288 from 1984 are good investments.

Put this thread in a time-capsule and see how we all did in 10-20 years.

Approx $300 star first-card investments that may or may not pay off:

two 1986 Procards West Palm Beach Randy Johnson PSA 9 (Pop 62 in PSA 9, pop 15 in 10). probably just over $300
There's a 1986 Procards Lakeland John Smoltz PSA 10 sitting a while out on the bay for approx. $290. A bit high, but with a pop of only 14 in PSA 10, it could pay off if he makes the HOF
two 1981 TCMA Wade boggs PSA 10 (pop 31) Probably just $300-360 for the pair
1982 TCMA Hawaii islanders Tony Gwynn PSA 9 (62 in 9, 8 or is it 9 now in 10 with the recent board Member's review bump) with fifty to eighty bucks to spare
1983 Canadian National Juniors Mario Lemieux PSA 9 (14 in 9, 0 in 10) with almost c a note to spare. First card of a legend.
1983 Canadian national Juniors Steve Yzerman PSA 9 (9 in 9, 0 in 10) with a c note to spare. First card of another legend and in the same set as the Lemieux!
1986 Merchante Converse David Robinson, you can get quantity raw like 6 or 7 or maybe as much as 3 graded in PSA 6 or so. Not many out there.

two 1982 TCMA Don Mattingly PSA 9 (Pop 16 in 9, Pop 9 in 10), probably just over $300 (ok not a first card, but the 1981 Arbys is utterly worthless as the team counterfieted, oops "reprinted" it in droves years later and you cannot tell the original from the reprint. You can substitute the 1982 Colombus Clippers Police Mattingly as well but you may spend a decade trying to find one centered with the photo credits running up on the left hand-side in the white boader.

Not first card but you might be able to get a 1981 Red Rooster Wayne Gretzky long hair raw or low graded like a PSA 2 for $300 or so. From what i can see, only 9 have been graded by the big 3 TPGs (actually I believe it is 6 by PSA, 3 by BGS and 0 by SGC if I ran their pop reports correctly) and that number hasn't budged in over a year.

Finally, there are sets that have the hallmark of a good collectable for the future in Canadian Junior Hockey Team/Police/Locally issued team sets from the very late 70's to mid to late 80's. Many are scarce, hard to find in high grade and have 1st cards of some highly beloved stars from Denis Savard, Ron Francis, Cam Neely, the Beezer, Hextall, Wendel Clark, Bob Probert, Dave Andreychuk, John MacLean, Al Macinnis, Gary Roberts, Brendan Shanahan, etc. years before their RCs. Some of these sets have Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr in them as an owner or alumni. My gut tells me our friends to the north will be coveting these sets someday and they are very cheap now. Collectors went nuts for the Oshawa Police Lindros back in 1990 and even counterfeited it. Although he was awesome, he never was able to attain that cant miss legend superstar shoes he was supposed to fill. You can probably get an assortment of 10 cards mentioned above for the $300.....if you can find them

Those are my thoughts. Good luck!

I thought the question was which one card would you buy but since it has turned into how would you best spend $300 I will give this answer.

    1992 WCW Topps UK

The number I purchased is higher but I will say 30 sets of these at $10 a piece.

I feel confident this is going to turn out to be a good investment.

    Sold $102.50

If I had $300 exclusively for a single card purchase I would monitor ebay for:

    - 1971 Topps Reggie Jackson PSA 8 or Munson PSA 7.5
    - 1952 Topps Hoyt Wilhelm PSA 3-4/SGC equivalent
    - 2012 Topps Mini Bryce Harper autograph

If you made such purchases, you could not lose money because some time in 2013 I would at least pay your cost plus postage and insurance.

Wait. Forget all that. Instead I would buy 1000 1987 Fleer Update Luis Polonia cards. Yeah, that's really the route to go. I would make sure the seller threw in 500 1986 Topps Milt Thompson, 500 1985 Topps Rafael Santana, and 50 1986 Topps Update Bobby Bonilla. I would also push the seller to find all those 1986 Topps Update Rey Quinonez cards that were buried in the attic and would not at all question what led him to make that purchase.

Yeah..........that's the route to go with $300. Let me know. I know a guy.

I'm going to take a different direction and say buy cards of guys that are dead with a huge fan base - Roberto Clemente or Thurman Munson. Or maybe a nice Andre Dawson Rookie. . way overlooked.
  • A couple years ago I would have strongly recommended Miggy 2000 Chrome rookies (that was my main buy) - but I think they are pretty pricy right now at 120ish for a 9 and 375ish for a 10. If you are a gambler then buy 2000 Topps traded sets at under 100 - with the chance at a Miggy 2000 Auto rookie which is a HUGE win! Now over 1000 for a raw and 2000+ for a PSA 9.
It is irrelevant whether he wins the TC back-to-back he is putting together another monster season and he only gets stronger as the season progresses.
