Florence Cherry, a 57-year-old nurse who drives the 15-year-old van when her husband, a Vietnam veteran, isn't using it to get to his job as a prison guard.

So he has a Govt job making at least 60K and she probably makes at least 40k. Both probably have health insurance and retirement plans paid for by their employers and they cant afford tires?

Here's where the education system has failed again. By the time you are 57 years old, if you haven't figured out how to manage money well enough to avoid paying triple the going price for tires, there is something seriously wrong.

A prison guard and a nurse in NC don't have enough money on hand to buy tires? And then there is Birdie Smith who couldn't afford to buy tires for her Infiniti SUV. I have no sympathy for these people. i'm glad they exist because they keep boosting the economy!

They get kids in sex ed classes now in the 4th grade. There is no treatment of managing money in any grade.

please don't mention accounting classesimage accounting classes don't teach money management they just train the next generation of thieves .

The same kids that know nothing about money and their parents who also know nothing get handed 1000 pages of cryptic student loans and sign themselves into debt slavery.

The tire and furniture rentals and payday loans are their to nab the fish that don't go to college.

None of these things happen by accident , this system hasn't failed its humming right along the way its supposed to.

We agree that education is important. If nothing else, a good education provides the ability to use proper English grammar and punctuation.

Unbelievable.... in some of the cases noted, they must be wasting their money elsewhere or are incredibly overextended. Cheers, RickO

You may have noticed that tires and their installation have gone up in price significantly in recent years. This is at least partly due to new regulations that every new car has a built-in air low air pressure idiot indicator light. They used to do free install.

While I tend to agree with the comments here, its still a very sad thing to read about these kind of things. Im not saying that we should be giving free handouts (actually I think we should do the exact opposite), but I do think we need to completely redo the education system. No one should go through life like this. Im worried about the future generations :/

OMG, tires. Don't get me started. Not only have they doubled in price the last few years, BUT....

You 49 staters will love this. In sunny CA it is now a law that a BAR regulated company is
supposed to I. M. P. O. U. N. D. your vehicle if the tires are older than FIVE years old as per
the date code on the tire. How do I know this? It happened to a friend who got to purchase four new tires from the shop
    Have a nice day

This is pretty much the size of it.

They get indoctrinated to be consumers and brainwashed to believe whatever they
are told to. They see Pepsi ads and are even allowed to buy and use Pepsi on school
grounds but are expelled if they take an aspirin or point their fingers like a gun. They
are taught to stand in line, hold hands, and do what they're told and then they're told
about sex ands pepsi. They're told to love everyone even if that person wants you dead.

This is all in preparation for life as a consumer where manufacturers decide what you
want and bankers whether they'll take your property or not. There's no longer such a
thing as competition except to see who can get to the bottom first or to destroy the most
wealth in getting rich. The competition is to see who can provide the lowest value at the
highest possible price. They shrink packages, add poisons to food, and compete to drive
businesases into the dirt to extract the most cash from the remains. We're well on the
way to having a country of sheep led by a single company that dictates your every move
while everything else is prohibited. Where once government banned monopoly it is now
    encouraged and mandated.

Sheep are so much easier to tend than people and will eat what they're told.

I've never had tires for 5 years.

But I will say that many, many cars in CA have tires in dire need of replacing. Its no wonder there are so many accidents with just minor rain showers.

    Dave

Tires are not the primary reason for fender benders out here.

Since it rains so little in most areas, there is an inordinately large amount of
grease and oil build up and we don't get a good hard rain but for a couple of times
each year to clean the pavement

The other reason is....people seem to be in a hurry and don't change their
    driving habits in the rain.

A lot of people have old tires because they don't wear them out. But the synthetic rubber deteriorates after
a period of years from the inside out.

44 years of driving/ 1.5 million miles/ no accidents. I have bought a lot of tires!
    Have a nice day

    Agree on all those points.

Im looking at new tires on my Chevy dually after only 1 year--80k miles. And replaced the steering tires on my semi after 6 months and 135k.

Funny thing was having to put chains on to travel over the Sierras this winter. Roads werent even bad--by East Coast standards. One of the CALTRANs helpers said the chains were necessary to protect Californians from themselves. LOL

You drove 80K miles in one year? Do you travel for work or tow a trailer?

The last set of tires on my jeep were on there for 9 years. I've only driven that thing the past 2 years maybe 2k miles and I imagine the set I put on last year is going to be the last set I put on for maybe another 10 years or more if they don't rot. Cali could Kissmyass if those tires were to be deemed illegal.
