<< <i>A few months ago I picked up a 1879-S morgan dollar from a seller on eBay. The listing had really poor, over exposed scans of the coin, but I didn't see too many marks so I decided to go for it (The seller offered a full refund, so I figured I might as well go for it - worst case scenario I lose the couple of bucks it would have cost me to ship it back).
Here are the scans that the seller had used it the listing.
I also made this short video, showing the reflectivity.
I ended up selling the coin raw to someone on another forum, that I frequent. He got the coin graded, and told me he would let me know the grade when he got it.
The coin received a MS-66 (No PL - I was surprised by that) by PCGS.
Post your stories of a coin(s) that you bought raw, and got graded by PCGS. (Could be a grade you weren't expecting, an old cleaning you weren't aware of, undergraded, etc.)
I still some what regret selling that coin. But - My favorite part of this wonderful hobby is the thrill of the hunt! >>
I bought on ebay a 1955 Double Die I thought was XF45 sent it to our host and it came back AU53 sorry no photo of it as I sold it and made a couple of bucks
These threads are awesome. Unfortunately, I do not currently have photos of the coins I will talk about. They are in a bank vault somewhere...I hope! I purchased a problem free F 12 1919 p half dollar on eBay for about 25-30 dollars. As well, I purchased a number of barber semi key date coinage at decent prices back in 09-10 which are now worth more. However, I have been duped before and wasted over a thousand dollars on counterfeit coins.

<< <i>This is the only Dahlonega love token that I've found for sale in my 32 years as a Dahlonega specialist. I bought it on the bourse at a Baltimore show in 2004.

I love it! (No pun intended.) But everyone knows my eccentric propensity for holeys and love tokens.
I had a C-mint holey gold dollar on my hat at one time, but the hole took out part of the mintmark and made it hard to distinguish from an "O".
And a love token holey trumps a regular old holey any day.
I've been fortunate to have several great raw coin purchases... along with a few very bad ones of course too...
My best is probably a 1943-S Mercury Dime that was on the bid board of a local coin shop one week. The tag said beautiful toning and UNC. The coin was in an old and obviously reused dirty flip so it was hard to see, but I knew enough that it had really nice toning. Through the flip, I could tell it was indeed UNC, but I had no clue on how it would grade out. Ended up competing with a couple of other bidders and got the coin for $11. Ended up grading PCGS MS67 and I ultimately sold it for quite a bit more
If you mean best as in the most money we made on a coin then we bought an ungraded GSA for $540 on eBay. Graded it and had the VAM put on it and a few weeks later sold it for $15,000.
I bought a bunch of Buffalo Nickels for 35C each as the owner had told they had "gone through them already, and did his research on eBay." The third one I flipped over was a 3 legged that graded AU 55. (Still have it)
I bought a book of Lincoln Cents (1940 to present) as part of large collection. It sat on shelf for many months with many other books of the same type until one day the pile was too high and I started busting the coins out of albums for the bulk auction bags.
I found this:

I was sick one late night and took a small gamble on a Morgan off the bay…I started a Thread about it on another coin forum and people started saying how it was harshly-cleaned and such.
…here is a screenshot of the eBay listing
…here is the coin back from our host
…here are the results after sending to CAC
…by no means a cherrypick, but I thought I did alright
1943 Doubled Die Obverse bought it raw and it graded PCGS MS-62. It is POP 1 with one graded Higher in MS-64. These are the only two that are graded in Mint State.
When I first started collecting a few years ago, I took a $500 gamble on this seller's picture in which they didn't show the reverse. Based on the results.....well, lets just say the bug bit me.

Sent it to PCGS and it graded MS63. Second finest in existence, behind a PCGS-63+.

Hoard the keys.
My best raw purchases were: Rainbow toned 1939S Jefferson with full steps, Gem 1938 mercury dime with FSB, and a 1933S walker that slabbed AU55.
The only coin I still have is the merc (I wish I didn't sell the other two).
