Define cleaned? Lightened, scrubed, dipped, unattractive? If any ones of those prevented coins from being encased there would be only a fraction of coins in plastic and a lot of upset collectors.
if cleaning/lightening isnt an issue, then why are so many coins returned with "questionable coloring" ??? cant have it both ways. either it is entirely original or questionable. i believe the question here is why are some coins scrutinized while other (obvioulsy cleaned) coins escape detection ?
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
Hairlines and looks somewhere between toned back naturally over a long period of time or possibly stained.... Not that good on rare junk.. The bell goes off for NO and I just move on.
I wouldn't think that any one particular coin is the exemplar for market acceptability.

I'm not sure there is a new standard, per se. There is a fair market value when any item starts at $.99 Fair play ! That's the standard bearer on eBay.

I agree but really what's the difference? I'm not saying that PCGS should have graded it either way but if the hairlines take away from the overall eye appeal of the coin why does it matter whether it came from circulation or cleaning? If there is a distinct different on how it looks then at what point does a lightly clean coin get acceptance over an abused circ?
I don't think it's awful but it's not for me. I agree it looks better from a distance. Maybe a grainy pic making the zoom-over look ech. It does have a cool crack along the top of the rev.

Original, cleaned or otherwise, $811 is a load of cash for a VF35 1847-0 quarter. Mr. Eureka sold me a pair of XF45's (with luster) back in the late 1980's that would go AU50 or maybe better today. $185 each for those guys. I even recall finding a nice one of these in Fine-15 for $14 at a yard sale in Worcester, MA around 1979. That didn't happen every day. The 47-0 is probably one of the best of the 2nd tiered dates in the seated quarter series. The first tier takes up about 20 coins.

Count me as another "ditto".
And FWIW, if the coin was more original, I'd probably call it XF40. 47-O's don't come struck like you might hope or expect.

Very big. Looks market acceptable in the slab shots.
