Cameo or Not?

BodinBodin Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭
I have my 5 early birds that I'm going to use up at the Long Beach Expo, and am thinking that I'll include this. Question is:
Do you think it will get the CAMEO designation?

Cameo is often in the "eye of the beholder," isn't it? That first photo certainly qualifies, but the others could lead to alternate interpretations. Let us know whether the "eye" of the grader goes your way.

First it is hard to guess from a picture and if your going to the show I would ask some of the board members that will be there before you submit it. As a Washington collector of proofs My guess is No. I found this 66 cameo NGC and it crossed as just a Proof 65. There are a few in my sets that I look at and often wonder WHAT is holding the grade down. This coin is going back someday as I feel it is a Cameo. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Enjoy tom

From those photos i would say no, but cameo under toning from a photo is always a tough call.

If I'm not mistaken, the reverse will be the telltale signs of full cameo. The Obv looks to may be cameo, but I would fully inspect the Rev for any breaks as this will knock it back.

Judging from the photographs, I would say no..... hope it is better in hand... Cheers, RickO

Thanks for the help and information everybody.
I like the idea of asking board members while I'm the the expo, but how would I know who they are?

IMO I think the pictured coin would stand a much better chance of obtaining a CAM designation from a TPG if it was untoned. The toning that has developed on the coin has impaired the fields of the coin. If the toning were removed with a bath and as a result the fields of the coin were revealed as being deep, watery and black, then I think the coin would have a good chance at receiving the designation. The frost on the devices on both sides looks thick and even (except possibly the lettering on the rim which is too toned over to tell).

In any event, nice coin. In hand under good lighting does the toning add to, detract from or have no effect on the eye appeal of the coin?
