Proud Day

Yesterday morning my sister called and said that my nephew was "graduating" from pre-school. She told me that she wanted to get him a small gift and all he kept asking for was a coin so she called for my advice on her way to the local B&M. He is five. Then last night my son and I were picking out a book for his bedtime story and he bypassed the usual Thomas the Train, Seuss, etc. and insisted on reading his own copy of the 2013 Red Book. While "reading" it he identified George Morgan by photo and insisted I read the captioning under every colonial coin photo. He is four. So it would appear my collection may have at least two appreciative heirs. image

Sweet! My kids have been enjoying coin shows with me since they were about 5 or 6.

They approach it in two completely different ways. My nephew likes to look at the dates/mint marks and organize coins while my son likes the look/feel/design aspect of coins. If they stick with it, I'm guessing my nephew goes VAM/Overton/Snow as he gets older while my son turns into a type collector/hoarder. I do a little of both. Both have Whitman cent folders that they are working on and my son has a cool buffalo nickel board that we have been filling out a little at a time.

Thanks for sharing. Good example to all of us how our example can have an influence on small children.

I totally agree, but with one caveat: don't smother the poor lad. By all means give that spark some fuel and fan the flames of interest, but don't pile too much on, particularly for one so young, or it could become overwhelming. Let him have fun and give him free rein to follow his own interests as they mature and develop. Who knows, as he gets older, he might teach YOU a thing or two.

PS- I only share that concern because it is a temptation I'd have to struggle to resist, personally. You're lucky to have such a bright prospect. I've got some promising young nephews, myself, one of whom does have some interest in coins which I've cultivated as much as possible, but I suspect coins are but one of his interests, and not his #1 passion.
