Removing sticky substance from cards

I recently purchased some cards and some of the ones in the group have some sort of sticky substance on the front. I'm not sure what it is exactly. It almost seems like shellac but it doesn't look yellow like a baseball that has shellac. It is more clear color. Some of the cards only have it in spots, some over most of the card. Any ideas on removing the sticky substance? Thanks for any suggestions.

Just to be clear, this is like a coating of something that is stuck to the card. It lays flat on the surface of the cards.

Swartz, it doesn't really show up in a scan. It is a clear transparent substance that lays flat on the card.

What sort of cards? Does the substance hold a finger print if you touch it?

  • Sounds like the evil shiny leftover gum residue that you can really see under a light. Not possible to remove. Is it really sticky ? If so, better check to see if the person stormtrooper referred to above had owned it, in case of previous excitement in that way about the card

if you know anyone at an auto dealership or shop, try a little dab of "virgin solvent" on an expendable card. That stuff takes off anything gooey quicker than I've ever seen

If it's a chrome card a solvent like nail polish remover or goo gone should work, no?

Yes, they do hold a finger print if you touch them. They are Topps cards from the 70's. For the life of me, I can't figure out what it could possibly be. Basically, if you lay the card flat and put the tip of your finger on it, you can pick the card up. Interestingly, the cards separate fairly easily when you separate them, but they are still sticky. The cards are autographed, so that presents a bit of a challenge as well, as I don't want to damage the signatures.
