Wow! My old 1865 10c NGC MS63 CAC upgraded three points!

I bought this coin off eBay in an old white-label NGC holder a few years ago (I paid $1600 iirc). I thought it was a lock gold CAC, but it only went green. I sold it through Heritage in Aug 2012, where I realized PQ money. I always thought it deserved to be in a 64 or 65 holder, but never expected to see it reappear as this!

<< <i>The consigner might be not be ecstatic about the coin being called out during a live auction but it is an interesting case study. Although it says more about the state of NGC standards old vs new than anything else. >>
Why is that coin not fair game for discussion? There are those who believe that EVERYTHING [i.e. whether it was submitted to CAC and not passed] should be disclosed about a coin up for sale/auction, while others opine that such info should only be divulged upon asking.

I didn't say it was game to be discussed, I said the consignor most likely wishes that part of the coins past stay quite. In some circles it is slightly taboo to talk about active auctions.

What does that mean Captain?
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

i concur; when it was in the 63 holder. not a 66 but not a 63 either. that old holder with a gold sticker would have been a nice way to keep that one. the new ngc, even as a 66 is just meh. i'm sure it will bring buku buks tho.

and the "right" grader graded it.

I guess not everyone subscribes to full disclosure. As long as it isn't done maliciously, I see no reason for someone not to volunteer such information; esp. if they have no vested interest in the coin's sale. If I was a bidder, I'd appreciate knowing.
Will,
You sold it right. The new owner won't recoup all of his money.
I think as most have mentioned, it's a great 64 - and deserving
of a Green Bean at that level. In 63, I could see a Gold CAC.
I'll be very curious to see how it fares in the upcoming auction.
I like the coin quite a bit, but would rather see it in our host's slab.

<< <i>IMO that's a 64 with gold CAC or 65 with green CAC. I thought maybe a regular 64 would have been the grade.. but then I looked at it closely. If I'm not mistaken, those coins are really, really tough to find without any mark on them whatsoever. A 66 is a bit of a stretch, as there are numerous little ticks on the knees and the "1" on the obverse's date- so a 65 is a really solid, appropriate grade for such a coin. They should have given you a gold CAC the first time around. >>
Or a 66 with a black bean????
<< <i>Reality check.....it is ngc.
That's what I thought, maybe PCGS 64+. Very nice coin but the reverse holds it below gem. 66 just seems too high looking at the reverse.

Always suspected, but finally confirmed. If anyone has had the experience to know it would have to be the Captain. I'll bet there are tales to tell.
