I've got 3 closing this weekend. Nothing I should be sweating really.

Honestly, I think the most I've ever sweated during an auction was around this time last year during the Dmitri Young auction.

Can any prewar bidders go ahead and call it a night for me. The worst is going to bed as the high bidder only to be outdone in the middle of the night.

So if it says "internet bidding closed" then that's all the bidding for that item? If so, WOOO-HOOOOOOO!!

CW, you have great taste in cards so I can only imagine it's something sweet you reeled in. Once sure it's closed gotta let us know.

Oh man-- my one lot says closed too and if that's the case boo ya! Was some heated bidding for a minute this afternoon and was certain I'd get squashed.

You guys won! Congrats! There is no live bidding the next day in this HA auction. I got shut out, but overspent on a different recent auction, so it is all good. If you are up for it, please share what you won.

Great pickup! You guys are making me second-guess myself, almost, about the bidding rules. I will feel like the biggest jerk if I am wrong, but am comfortable you are winners tonight!

Odd fact - as I am writing this I received an outbid notice from REA. I guess people have already moved onto the next one!

Amazing They can fetch 18k on a 52 wax pack given it was graded by GAI.
  • esquiresportsesquiresports Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭
My understanding is that the first generation label GAIs are very reliable, but there are more advanced collectors like Griffins that can chime in on this one. I own several first generation GAI packs, so I hope so!

    Congrats Griffin!

    Esquire,

Thx for confirming-- can exhale now. I'm kind of shocked-- haven't had a bid hold outside eBay in a long time. I was after one of my all time favorite cards: the D304 Cobb. Pretty low pop across SGC and PSA in all conditions. Saw one that was a Brunner's back at a show recently in SGC 1.5, had tremendous eye appeal but the owner wanted $7500 cash and would not budge. He knew how tough it was not to find mangled. VCP shows that it almost never comes up, and when it does the image is ruggedly jacked up. I saw this one in my range and had to make a run. In higher grade it's just not possible price wise for me, so a low grade one was the move. To me it's all about the front on this card so back was not a concern. I see the T206s everywhere though I love the Bat Off image, but I have always been drawn aesthetically to the duo of the d304 and Cracker Jack.

Whoa. Beautiful card! The guys at Net54 would really appreciate this one (not that people here won't). I have been looking at maybe getting into some vintage cards, and Leon and crew have a ton of knowledge. While some of the guys come off like the stuck-up vintage dealers that turned me away Fromm vintage at the card shows in the late 80s and 90s, the knowledge base is incredible and most are very friendly and helpful. There is one REA Cobb I bid on that I could possibly win. Great pick-up!

You are right Scott and don't be too worried. I've busted out many GAI first generation packs and submitted to PSA without a problem. In my experience over 95% of the GAI first generation packs are good, but luckily I'm batting 1.000 so far with them. People have to remember that they were the only game in town for awhile. The real major issue GAI had was with those grocery cellos and then a bunch of freshly wrapped 1977 wax packs which they graded.

I think many unopened guys actually prefer the GAI holder especially for wax packs over PSA although their newer holders are working out better. No wrapper ripping issues from the gum in those GAI holders that I've heard.

What an amazing auction this was! I was actually watching more items in this auction than I am in REA, and REA has always been the gold standard for me. Congrats to all the winners - I saw some really buyer-friendly prices on some cool items. And Matt - that D304 Cobb is a great image. You won't see many of those floating around!

I really liked the fact that they let each lot end if it wasn't still receiving bids. This made the auction much more fun to watch in the overtime bidding. I lucked out and won all three lots I was bidding on. The only problem with winning all three lots is having to liquidate a few cards to cover my good luck image

I've gotten my invoice the next day, but I think it was in the afternoon. I remember it wasn't automatic. Congrats, that would have been one of my choices if I didn't already spend too much.

  • Thanks Mike its has a few splits on the corners but not something that comes up often. I checked the pop report and can't find them noted specifically, wondering if it will fall under cello or wax.

If crossing over to PSA, do I have to break it from the GAI holder?

Prices were pretty decent in this auction. The 66 and 67 wax packs went for a real good buyers price.

Edited to add link if works.

  • cpamikecpamike Posts: 5,566 ✭✭✭
I wouldn't bust it out as I think a PSA 6 would be as high as you'd get and I'd be worried about any additional tearing by handling it. There is not much more of a premium for PSA graded high end packs over GAI especially since it is in a first generation flip. You could try to cross it over, but it is usually hard for PSA to authenicate it without busting it out.

I went after the 1968 GAI 8.5 rack pack but bailed after $1,200. image

yeah i think i won the 75 topps fb cello box. first time bidder so confused if i actually won since no confirm yet. I'm (super) slowly working on a run of fb cellos, that 77 fetched a serious price.

HA is always a day or two later on the invoices on the signature Auctions. Remember there are lots going off today and tomorrow too. If it's closed, you'll get your invoice soon enough.

I was able to finish off one of my sets last night, so I am very happy!
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

The invoice will go out after the last of the lots has closed. This is a big one, and they assume you are bidding all three days, so they won't send out invoices until the auction officially ends.
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
at least they are consistent, they're probably the slowest auction house on shipping lots out as well.

You aren't lying. I live in Dallas (where HA is based), and it took over a month for me to receive the last item I won from them. At some point you'd think I should just be able to swing by on my lunch hour and pick the package up!

I finally got my FedEx tracking number from the prior week's auction so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. At least their shipping & handling costs seemed reasonable.

I didn't realize that Anthony. So if you think they are high, the AH's are receptive to adjusting the shipping costs?

Nice! You don't have to reveal, but was it the Eddie Collins? I was checking that one out, but since money does not grow on trees I had to bow out of that one. Either way, any Black Swamp card is awesome and I'll look forward to your post...

Matt -- that D304 Cobb is one amazing card, and the front of yours looks nice for the grade. Plus, when you see SGC has only graded 8 examples, it's not your everyday Cobb card. Great score!

I was high bidder on this N43 Ewing, which has always looked more like a piece of art to me than just a "baseball card". I like how it's a re-interpretation of Buck's N29 card, with the added space for the player catching the popup, barehanded, no less.

My strategy of placing an early high bid worked in this case, although I'm surprised it held up. REA has the same card in the same grade in their current auction, so it will be interesting to see how that one does by comparison. Heritage has some bright colors on their scans, but here it is until I get it in and get it re-scanned....

I don't know their policy with personal checks as far as whether they want to hold them to clear or not. However if you pay with cash or debit/credit card, then yes, simply call and let them know you are coming to pick your item up and they'll retrieve it and have it ready to roll for you

There are no problems if you want to pick up the items that you won, however if you try to pick up another collectors' items they will need to have confirmation from the buyer.........and you will have to pay sales tax on that item regardless if they live in another state. I tried doing this a couple of years ago and they tried adding the sales tax to his items.
