Common Date Double Eagles in Common Grades?

stevepkstevepk Posts: 238 ✭✭✭
With the recent drop in gold prices, have the values of common date double eagles in MS-62 and MS-63 also dropped, or have numismatic premiums risen to compensate?

I may be going to a coin show this weekend and would to know what to expect. Can I expect to see lower prices on common date double eagles since gold has dropped? I am hoping to buy.

I am comparing today to two or three months ago, not five or ten minutes ago for some of you who live and breathe this stuff every day.

MS62-63 Saints have dropped but not as much as their gold content. Expect to pay around $1750 for
an MS62 with gold around $1450. Check Ebay auctions and completed auctions.

The desire not to lose money is very strong....... Premiums will remain....even for the more common grades. (Unless, of course, someone needs immediate cash). Cheers, RickO

Premiums in the higher grades maintained the most value, esp. MS65's and MS66's. Sort of makes the lower grade MS ones a better deal. I still like the MS63's over
MS62's for such a tiny price difference. But the quality difference can be huge if you cherry out a nice 63+. When I was shopping for nice Saints back in early March
before the huge price drop, very few wanted to sell their Saints at market levels. I can only imagine it's 10x worse now for the smaller dealers who stock only a few of these
    at a time.

Current price range of 62-64 from the larger US gold dealers is $1785-$1830. For a measly $45 difference, buy the MS64. If you're lucky you can find one of solid CAC
quality for little to no premium. CAC 64's often bring another 5-10% basically covering any premium you might pay to a MS63. Much more potential in 64's than 62's.

Just find those you like at the show and buy. No worries about $20 here or $20 there. Fundamentallly, we're talking the same $20. Buy the one you like by using 20/20 vision or at least a 5x loupe.

One of the most popular Types ever. I would expect the condition would have to be much worse than 62-63, in order to pay BV. Try old jewelry. Lots of times those coins are XF at best, due to all the wear (from wearing the jewelry) and sell around BV.

high grades in common dates is not unusual, particularly with Saints. Asking prices would lead you to believe that it is. Common date double eagles are generally overpriced in most all grades.

As bullion I wouldn't pay more than spot plus 10% - AGEs are a better bullion play.
