The Official Collectors Universe Members Hall Of Fame

I thought it might be a good idea to recognize board members amongst us who have, and still continue to do good deeds or that have helped us in any way along with our personal collections. People who have a passion for the hobby and maybe have influenced us in some way or another and because of them, have possibly even influenced and helped shape us to the point were we have even had our own collecting goals shifted for the better. Board members who have taught us a thing or two about the hobby and who commit unselfish acts, whether its getting a VCP price for someone in that time of need or maybe sending a PM to someone because they had something that that other collector may enjoy. Maybe someone let you participate in there sub? They didn't do it to get recognized, but to help a fellow board member, simply from one card collector to another.

I would like this to get updated as often. Anytime you feel like giving a public thanks for any particular reason, just come here and share that good experience that you had on this board. Lets rephrase the famous old saying and switch it with something more appropriate such as no good need should be left unnoticed.

Who knows, maybe by the end of the year, I will create some categories and let YOU guys decide who fits the bill simply to recognize those who deserve recognition. Lets turn this place into a positive and fun atmosphere. I'm not looking for long stories (unless you want to share) but more along the lines of a simple thank you can really goes a long way and may even make the person feel good knowing that you helped that in some fashion. You don't have to thank everyone for every little thing because I could even be here for a long time but who doesn't enjoy a little recognition from time to time. I will come back here and show more recognition toward other members as time goes on as well. Who do you think is worthy. Remember, this isn't a popularity contest. Just more along the lines of personal recognition.

I'll start:

I would personally like to tip my hat to bobbyw8469. He has given me an open invitation anytime he does his subs - even when he doesn't make it a public offering for all to partake in. I have got to know him quite well since I have joined and he got me into this whole PSA grading thing because before him, I only collected raw cards but I decided to try this whole PSA thing out and I became hooked. I know he may not be the most popular with some of you but the guy is a stand up person in my book and so with that said, Thanks again buddy.

Marc, what an awesome thread. I have a couple of people I would like to recognize:

CpaMike and Grote. When it comes to un-opened, these two guys know there stuff. Both have done a fabulous job helping newbies understand the un-opened market as well as helping to educate all of us especially on how to spot re-sealed product. Both have personally helped educate me which I will be forever grateful. Not only that, I have made two life long friends.

Cool Idea. I've been here a long time--spend the majority of my time as a lurker--usually check in almost everyday and read threads, but sometimes go months between posts. In my years here, I have been witness to some really awesome individuals doing awesome deeds of kindness and helping fellow collectors. Have also seen several individuals who made me laugh all the time with there wit and humorous posts. Have also seen the lower end of the scale (trolls, punks, and a-holes), I usually don't get involved in dramas, and due to financial circumstances don't buy too much like I did years ago.

But I have observed some guys who have always remained kind and level headed over the years, even though some may not be here anymore.

Classic nice members, in no particular order:

    artimus
    lawnmowerman
    CopperJJ
    duncangal
    pandrews
    Stone193

and there are a bunch more classic nice people, but instead of listing all of them now, these are the ones that stand out most in my memory, and would be my initial nominees for a CU HOF. I could throw out another 20 or more if more nominees are needed.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

    1. fergie23 - I haven't seen it in a while, but his pack rip thread was epic. When someone can watch from the sidelines and get excited, you know it's a great thread.

    2. thenavarro - Always pleasant and willing to share his pursuits; I'm glad to have one of Mike's cards in my collection.

    3. Dpeck100 - I vaguely remember that era of wrestling, but you can't deny the man is passionate about his cards and is knowledgeable.

Akbar, you are bringing out some memorable names.

I'd start with the following as well in no particular order:

    Stone

    Grote

    Lawnmowerman

    Pandrews

    BarksuD

    sixdart

shouldacouldabeena introduced me to these boards.

There are some good people on this site.

Of course, we all make mistakes or have a difference of opinion at times.

Two members that have tried to grow the hobby are MBmiller and Miconlegacy.

They both have sent cards to my little boys trying to get them involved into cards and that means a lot to me.

Thosebackpages(Eric) has really taught me a lot about cards through reading his posts. He is always encouraging and seems just like an all around good guy.

For all I know he is creep, but in my book he's good people.

Cincyredlegs for doing all the group breaks and CPAMIKE and Grote for teaching me a lot about unopened vintage. They really taught me many things I use when I get the chance.

Dutymon/Jswelton for doing group submissions I have been a part of in the past.

Good to see you and hope you are well.
  • I am a new member but in the two months I have been on these boards I have had nice chats and transactions with two really great forum members. Those two are Grote15 and cpamike, two of the unopened pack kings on this forum. I nominate these two gentlemen for their efforts to help me grow my unopened collection and for helping me with all of their informative posts on these boards. Thank you both! You guys are Hall of Famers in my book.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

I'd first like to say there are so many great guys on this board I've gotten to know over the years that are worthy, it would take me a long, long time to list them all. So I choose my 3 top...

    1) Summerof68 - As many of you know, Summer is the best at exposing resealers that I've ever meet. He is meticulous and thorough in his analysis and has saved numerous collectors on this board from unscupulous pack resealers. He has been instrumental in my growth as an unopened collector. He was also the one that introduced me to these boards and I'd like to thank him again even if he is no longer active on these boards.

    2) Stone193 - Mike is truely one of the rocks of this board and I always appreciate his posts on such a wide range of collecting interests. He was the first person to welcome me when I first posted on these boards and help guide me as a newbie. Mike is always the voice of reason and I only hope to have a tenth of his passion for the hobby. I will however go on the record and say that I don't ask Mike for any organizational advice. image

    3) Grote15 - Tim is the king of unopened in my book and I enjoy talking to him about every aspect of unopened very much. He is always helping fellow collectors here with his insightful and throughtful posts. Even though he occasionally strays and rips stuff open, I don't hold that against him. This is one place where I think Grote is HOF worthy!!!

And since she was nominated, I felt it was only fitting to have her grace us with her presence.

This place is worse off without Storm888. I miss seeing his posts. He's first ballot with thenavarro, Winpitcher (for post count alone! he's the Carl Yastrzemski of these boards) and lawnmowerman (a guy so popular he started his own spinoff. Let's call him the George Jefferson of the boards)

This is a great idea for a thread. There are so many truly good people here, and its not often we get the chance to tell people how much they are appreciated.

I have to break my nominations into two groups. The first are my first ballot HOFers; people who are in many ways the "heart and soul" of this forum. This is the group who many of us admire for their leadership, contributions and for the good example (usually) they set for the rest of us:

    Bosox1976
    cincyredlegs
    cpamike
    Dboneesq
    Dpeck100
    grote15
    itzagoner
    MacrosB
    miconelegacy
    MBMiller25
    MattyC
    Stone193

Plus the "veterans" committee nominees who we don't see as much of any more:

    fiveniner
    Golfcollector
    RonBurgundy

My second ballot nominations are probably not far behind group #1, but everyone cant be one the first ballot.

    08HALA20
    aconte
    BPorter26
    BaltimoreYankees
    cardcountry
    gemint
    handyman
    jeffcbay
    leadoff4
    ldferg
    mcadams
    MiniDuff
    MintMoonDog
    Nikklos
    OAKESY25
    prthd
    Stooge
    thunderdan
    thedutymon
    Toro
    TheDudeAbides
    thenavarro
    ThoseBackPages

And then there are many additional people who I have met through the forum who certainly are All Stars in their own right.

I'd be remiss if I didn't give a shout-out to Jeff (itzagoner) and Mark (cincyredlegs). The former appears to be serious once every 3 months or so, but don't let all of the dry wit fool you. Jeff was more than receptive to cardboard dialogue with a relative noob (moi), and for that I'm very grateful. The latter unselfishly coordinates our bimonthly feeding frenzies, and he does so with unwavering patience. I can guarantee you I asked a number of dumbass questions when I was initially trying to piece together the group breaks, but Mark never once treated them as such.

Two genuine guys who are true assets to the forum.

I've been fortunate to have met many fellow collectors and friends during my time on these boards, and I am grateful for that, as well as thankful for all the info I've learned here, too. There are many members who I have high regard for, but here are just a few for noew:

cincyredlegs--Mark has devoted a lot of time and effort for the benefit of the board by coordinating group rips, and I am happy to consider him a friend, as well.

cpamike--fellow unopened zealot, I have had the pleasure of knowing Mike on and off these boards and he is a quality individual.

miniduff and mintmoondog, aconte, Indy78--avid mini collectors with a great amount of knowledge about this very popular Topps set

summerof68--although he no longer posts here, his contribution to the unopened hobby was as significant as anyone's

JustinsShoebox--he did a fantastic job coordinating his own "group rips" consisting of case fresh 1979 Topps wax trays and 1980 Topps wax racks, and when it was all over and I casually mentioned that I'd love to have the case the 1980 wax racks came in, he sent me, free of charge, and on his own dime, a mint empty 1980 Topps baseball wax rack box.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I second that. Back in early 2012 he gave away pretty awesome cards. i think I even remember a Tom Brady Rookie BGS 9.5. Mike has done a lot for these boards and its members.

I think its pretty neat reading some of the great gestures that other board members have done for others.

Dpeck once sent me some Canseco Rookie cards knowing that there was a possible 10 in there and sure enough, the 86 Donruss and 86 Fleer BOTH came back as 10's. That shows what kind of people we have here on these boards. I even offered to send him back the Donruss PSA 10 since I already owned one in a 10 and that I was simply happy just having the Fleer alone in a 10 and he still refused to accept it. What did Dpeck say about it when I told him the grades? He told me that he was happy for me and that he would rather have those cards go to someone who would appreciate them more than himself. Selfless. I still own those cards today and they just wont ever leave my collection. Thanks David.

  • This is a great thread to read. Being fairly new, there's a lot to learn here, about fellow members. As in most aspects of life, it is easy to learn the bad from members, as in the most recent sequence of events, but it is a little more unusual to pick up on the good that is done!
