The Ripken seems to have the same registration issue as the other Ripken we were discussing earlier this week- The boxes are centered on the card nicely L/R, but the photos are placed too right overlapping the photo borders. Otherwise, a nice copy.
I opened my DS pack today. Bad news is that there were no superstars, the good news is that the corners on all cards were in pristine condition and there are probably 5-6 commons out of the pack that I'm going to sub.
Ok. I sorted everything and so here are pics of what I got. I only opened 2 packs of 84 Donruss and got a nice George Brett, but not gradable. Then 2 packs of Upper Deck 89 baseball which my streak of absolute nothing continues. All other packs and boxes will remain sealed. I have too many loose cards to deal with at the moment.

I know next to nothing about baseball, so this may be a dumb question. I noticed the different packages on the 1985's, is that a norm for that year? Just curious. Awesome pics BTW.
I noticed one of my 82 grocery racks had split open on back so I opened it. No Ripken or Smith but I did pull 4 blank back cards including a Yaz IA, so it was a cool rip nonetheless!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I received all my stuff on Thursday. All is still sealed at the moment, but may rip some of it in the near future. Out of 8 82 topps grocery racks, I had a couple of them with split backs with no star power on any of them. I had not much luck with stars on top or bottom on any of the packs except for an 82 cello with Henderson on the back. Thanks again goes out to Mark for setting these up and to the crew over at bbce for the outstanding product and service!!
I'm out of state right now but my brother should receive the box next week. I went on a buying spree with stuff I couldn't afford back in the day. 1989 football boxes, 1989 Upper Deck boxes, 1984-1985 Topps and 1987 Fleer Rack packs. Finally, I picked up a few 1981 Topps football vending boxes. I'm looking forward to opening a vending box with my sons...this was my first set as a kid, $17 for a dusty box.
If anyone opening the '82 Topps grocery racks has doubles they want to sell, pm me me, as I am looking at finishing a '82 Topps factory set (trying to upgrade some cards), and could use some pack fresh cards. Thanks!
Struck out on the 81 82 85 86 football and most of the baseball.
I too had one Fun bag with 81 golf and one with Kiss packs.
No Nicklaus for me but 5 Tom Watsons.
Kiss cards were way off centered and some miscut.
Are the Golf or Kiss cards worth grading?
The Donruss cards were pretty bad.
The 78-79 OPC were way off-centered.
All my 82 Grocery racks were sealed good.
After having no luck with the other packs I decided to open some 82's These were nicely centered. Probably 7-8 in each rack had great centereing but with corner or edge issues still found a couple per rack that might be subbed.
First I must give proper respect to Mark and the good folks at BBCE for the ability to participate in these.
Most of the time I'm not so lucky with these, but this time was very different. I pulled quite a few really stellar cards.
Do not have scans available yet but when I do I'll post them.
The highlight was the 83 Cello with Sandberg on the back. I am not an unopened collector by any means, and am struggling to keep this sealed. It is perfectly centered on the back.
I also pulled both 83 Donruss and 83 Fleer Sandbergs...so I got the Sandberg rookie trifecta.
Others I received:
1985 Topps Mark McGwire (L to R - perfect) (T to B - a bit too low) - shame on this one because the colors are bright and surface is perfect. No yellow print dots either! 1983 Donruss Wade Boggs - Dead centered and will be going to PSA. The other 1983 Donruss that were dead centered and will be going to PSA are Johnny Bench, Andre Dawson, Joe Morgan, and Bert Byleven 1984 Topps Don Mattingly - Very nice, probably 55-45 and will be going to PSA. 1984 Topps Cal Ripken - going to PSA. 1984 Topps Reggie Jackson - going to PSA. The other 1984 Topps that were nice, but will not be going to PSA were Ryne Sandberg, Dave Parker, Rollie Fingers, and Dennis Eck. 1983 Fleer George Brett - going to PSA. 1983 Fleer Howard Johnson - going to PSA. 1983 Topps Cal Ripken - dead centered - going to PSA. 1982 Topps - had some great pulls but none going to PSA for now: Nolan Ryan HL (dead centered), Dave Stewart (RC) should be gem...will hold for a another sub, Steve Sax (RC) (another dead centered gem - I already own this in a 10), Joe Morgan, Raines/Rickey.
No 82 Ripken, no Gwynns, and no 84 Donruss Mattingly (but I pulled that last time ).
Only question left...should I open the Sandberg cello and see if it's centered on the front?
Well, I was very happy with my haul. I got a couple of 1983 Fleer Baseball cellos for a partial box I've been filling, a couple of the 1985 Topps Baseball rack packs, and one of those 1987 Topps Baseball cello boxes from the sealed case to put away as I didn't have one. Here is my one pretty nice hit.

I realized today that I have yet to check my 1978 and 1979 O-Pee-Chee packs for star power, even though I decided previously I would not rip them just yet. I checked the 1978 packs and no dice, I checked the 1979 packs and Willie McCovey on the back of one and a 2nd year Eddie Murray on the back of the other! I figure I should slab the Murray, but what about the McCovey? The scan didn't show too well, but the Murray is the one on the right.

Very nice! The Murray pack might be worth slabbing but I wouldn't bother with the McCovey pack. A PSA 8 79 opc pack with Murray on back would probably retail for about $30.

<< <i>Isn't there a group rip on these boards during the National? I'm in if there is! >>
I thought there was going to be a preview one for the boards next week but I forget and am probably mistaken.
aconte >>
I don't think there has been one at National, but I believe you are right - Steve was going to set a few neat things aside and email Mark around the 1st of July to see if we could get a group break going. The only national ripping story I recall from last year is a board member (or two) ripping a dozen 86/87 Fleer basketball without hitting a Jordan.

opened the 2 '01 bowman best and topps traded and was not lucky this time around.

Thanks Justin! Indeed it is nice. The 85 has a Schmidt on top which is nice as well (harder to see).
I think I spy Bench on top of one of the sealed ones.

First & last cards in a cello are risky propositions regarding corners, IMHO. I'd leave it sealed... and I rip everything.
