SB---I like how the SMI bars are packaged 10 to a box. Makes storage very convenient. Did you by the decoder card to check the security mark on the back of the bar? How well does that work?

No. Its really not needed. If you tilt the bar just slighty ... you can see the VALID marking.

Yup, there is something kinda appealing about those Onzas. The first bullion I ever bought was 100 of those in 1974. Or maybe it was 200, I really don't remember.image

I think its the Thickness combined with the tactile heaviness of the metal.

I'd love to get my hands on the Gold version.

I can understand not buying the decoder card which seems a bit expensive at $20 for a piece of plastic. Where' a good place to buy these Sunshine bars?

  • Sorry, no pics.

I did pick up 2 JM 10oz bars at 25/oz.

I thought that was a fair price.

    Beautiful stack SB.

There are 480 grains in a Troy ounce so that must be really small.

  • I bought two silver art bars today on the 1st day of the 49th Annual Georgia Numismatic Association Coin & Currency show:

The 1st silver art bar purchase of today:

    image

    image

It is a 1973 Colonial Mint "John Mitchell Exit" silver art bar. I paid $25.00 for it (4-19-2013 spot silver close = $23.29/oz). There is a serial number on the top edge of this bar. Serial # 2764.

The 2nd silver art bar purchase of today:

    image

    image

It is an "Ann Arbor, Michigan" silver art bar. It was minted in Switzerland in 1974. I paid $27.00 for it (4-19-2013 spot silver close = $23.29/oz).

  • Here are two bars that I found today on the 2nd day of the 49th Annual Georgia Numismatic Association Coin & Currency show:

    Bar #1:

    Bar #2:

    image

Bar #1 is a "John F. Kennedy Half" sterling (.925 pure) silver art bar and bar #2 is a "Carson City Dollar" sterling silver art bar. Both of those bars were minted by Mini Mint. There is no mint year listed for those two bars but based on the mint years that are listed for the other Mini Mint bars in the 2007 5th edition Archie Kidd guidebook, it is either a 1973 or 1974 mint year for each of the two bars. Bar #1 weighs 0.30 troy oz and bar #2 weighs 0.31 troy oz. I paid a total amount of $7.00 for those two bars (average cost per bar = $3.50 per bar).

That second bar was manufactured by Credit Suisse. Not sure what the series was called, but they did make quite a few landmarks or famous places type bars.

I agree with this. The actual Credit Suisse mint was Valcambi SA. Even though it is not surrounded by a rectangle, the "CHI" symbol on the reverse side of that bar gave me a clue that it is a Valcambi SA silver art bar from the '70's. Here is an interesting article on that topic at Silver Art Collector:

    http://www.silverartcollector.com/article1.php

As for those 1970's Valcambi-manufactured silver art bars with the various landmarks, the Archie Kidd 5th edition did not specify if it was a set or not. All of those "landmark" bars that you are referring to were listed under "Switzerland" in the Archie Kidd 5th edition book. I do not have all of the Valcambi minted "landmark" bars but I think that another collector here was able to find all of the "landmark" bars that are listed in the Archie Kidd guidebook.
