eBay Seller Complaint

Ok, so this has now happened twice this week. I purchased a card off eBay - PSA 10, perfectly centered card pictured in the auction. And then, I get the card in the mail and it is a PSA 10, although it is a different cert # with poor centering. Nowhere in either auction did it state the card pictured may not be the same card, this is a stock photo, or anything along those lines.

The first seller gave me a small discount/refund which I can live with, but the second one was a $175 card. The reason I bought it was because of the centering and how perfect it looked. The centering on the card I received is 60/40 at best. I am pretty annoyed.

Anyone else encounter this? Thoughts?

Sellers that are THAT lazy should not be purchased from. I had that happen with a 1964 Topps Giants auto. Showed a nice sharpie auto, sent a light ball point pen auto. After I got my money back, the seller blocked me....thankfully. I won't have to make the mistake of buying from him again.

Sellers should always let you know if item pictured in listing is not the same as you will receive.

This has never happened to me, but I would certainly question the $175 card seller if he has the listed card. If he does, you should be entitled to that card, if not you should feel free to return your card for a refund.

If ebay doesn't have a policy on this they should. This is a typical "bait and switch".

I want the card pictured, and would not be happy if I were you.

    Good luck.

Gem Mint should really mean 50/50 centering. That should be universal, across the board, all grading companies. Makes no sense to me, and never has, why a Gem Mint 10 can be off center, even if ever so slight...

I'd ask for refund and block him.

Send the card back. That is shady. I always scan pics of the actual card that the buyer will receive. To do otherwise is dishonest and low.

Do you know how rare true 50/50 centering is? As impossible as it is to get the 10 grade, it would be impossible under that criteria. If that's important to a collector they should focus on a BGS 10 or 9.5 with 10 sub grade. I think 60/40 is reasonable but I'm not as much of a stickler on centering as others

Sure I know how rare 50/50 is. 35 years in this I would hope I do. The precise point of why Gem Mint 10's should be 50/50. image. Gem Mint should be that, Gem Mint.
  • I would send the card back, ask for a refund. Leave positive feedback but mention "the mix-up"
  • If seller will not exchange card at his expense (including shipping) for the correct card, I would file a pay pal case. First give the seller a chance to make it right. Then pay pal will do the rest for you. Pay pal seems a lot stronger in helping make sure a transaction goes right. Plus, they speak English!!!

The term 'bait and switch" will get their attention very quickly.

Could be a scam but maybe not. I have plenty of multiple copies of graded cards and could have easily screwed up an auction listing by displaying the wrong PSA serial#. I say let the seller know what happened and see what his response is. If any part of his reaction makes you uncomfortable, open up a case.

Some sellers mention they use 'stock' photos.

Those that do not and send a diff card are guilty of fraud. period.

2 graded similarly cards are not the same.

When I see a card that looks really nice, I email the seller directly and ask them if that is indeed the card for sale. Been burned a few times.

And it's funny how you never seem to hear stories about a buyer receiving a better card than the one pictured. To chalk this up to laziness may be a bit naive.

Well, back in the pre-PSA days Beckett allowed 60/40 centering for Mint condition, but otherwise the card should be totally perfect. But...like it or not PSA is the gold standard in grading today (that is, it's the grading scale nearly everyone goes by now).

The back centering would have to be 50/50 too then. How many pre-1980 cards would be 10s if that were the case? 3, maybe?

    Any less than 50/50 with a 5% leeway is a 9.5. Oh wait, ...

Send it back. That is false advertising. Who is the seller?
