Lost package?

I recently purchased a few cards and had them shipped USPS with delivery confirmation. They attempted to deliver but since I was not home at the time of delivery, they left the note for pickup at my local post office.

When I went there to pick up last friday they couldn't find it and asked if I can return Monday or Tuesday so they can speak with mailman.

So I go back today and sure enough, no package still! This time they tell me that the postmaster is involved and will call me tomorrow.

My question is, since delivery confirmation shows they still have it and they admit to the mishap as well, could I technically file a claim even though I don't have insurance?

It was a few mid grade Clemente cards valued around $200

Don't think so. It was a "gift"

Last time that happened to me the Postmaster "spoke" to the carrier, who must have admitted cuffing it. I was paid CASH ($50) on the spot with no paperwork filled out. Gotta protect the union carrier at all costs. The Postmaster was first defensive and wanted to know how it knew it was there etc. He only went to the carrier after I said that it's last tracking update was received here the the PO. He said he had no idea who had received it, and I told him I did, as the scanners they use have to be signed into, whoever was signed in when the package arrived there was the last one to handle it. He knew that I knew something was up and had to cover everyone's rear end. Wonder how much else he had taken and not had it reported? He wasn't my carrier after that day, but he is still working here in the city as a carrier.

Wow....interestingly enough I spoke with the postmaster today and the carrier yesterday. The carrier made a similar request to "pay for package". The postmaster was defensive this morning trying to act like I have the package. Also, she is questioning why I didn't insure something of value.

    This is extremely frustrating.

Tell the Postmaster it is time to either satisfy you in some way, or you will escalate your claim to the Postal Inspectors. SHE will have to file paperwork with you, and you can truthfully say that the carrier even offered to pay for the missing package. It is amazing how quickly things will move, or get found, when the Inspectors are mentioned. They are covering up something and got caught.

Tell the Postmaster that insurance is for loss or damage, not for outright theft by Postal employees.
