Anatomy of a resealed 1978 cello pack?

I thought I'd share this with the CU community. What we have here is quite possibly the complete lifecycle of a resealed cello pack that I purchased (and then returned once I noticed this).

First a full box of 1978 Topps Baseball cello packs is purchased:
image

Here's a good look at the middle pack on the bottom row. It shows Greg Nettles on the back.
image

About a month later the buyer of the box above offers the same Greg Nettles pack with Thurman Munson on top
image

Here's a close up image of the Munson pack. As you can see, this is definitely the same pack - see how the lines in the white along the left side match up.
image

Ok, here's the interesting part. Take a close look at the seal and notice that they don't match up. Look along the 1973 line (especially at the games played) and look at "1970". Anyone who knows 1978 Cello packs knows that the cards do not shift on their own.
image

Now I suppose it's possible that the pack left the seller's possession within that month and later returned so I'm not saying that he did anything himself but the above is quite intriguing. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks.

The scary part, at least to my inexperienced eye, is that I would never be able to tell that there was anything wrong with the seal on the fabricated cello w/ Munson.

This is why I simply do not buy cello packs, be them graded or raw, no matter who is selling them.

Thanks very much for sharing this. I'd be interested to knwo who the seller was.

  • This seller has had a unbelievable run of 78 cello's, to the point something seems odd, I mean after 3-4 Morris RC top packs things seemed off. Yes I bought some as the price was right, the feedback to that point was noting nothing of concern and wrappers/years looked right. It likley looked to good to be true but I knew that going in, if they fail the PSA test I can't say I wasn't knowing it was possible.

Maybe that's why my last pack took so long to ship, he had to make it! Did cross my mind haha.

I did pickup a nice graded wax pack from him so not all a loss.
  • 1all what did the seller say upon your return? Did he defend his product or admit to anything?
  • Like someone else mentioned - my naked eye would of never caught that either. Whos the seller so we can avoid them?

    Good looking out.

Just curious, if the pack comes back from PSA slabbed you're okay with it?
  • Besides the folds being identical, does it mean anything that the pack is Topps cards, and yet, the printing on the back say "made in Canada and Distributed by O-Pee-Chee"?

To my knowledge O Pee Chee never packaged cards in cello packs for that year or any for that matter, only wax packs. I have 78 cellos and they look basically the same as this one does with the text. Of course if I am wrong some of the unopened superstars will point out my errors image.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

The label does say the cards were made and printed in the USA.

It says that on the last line.

For some reason on all the packs I have, Topps let's us know that in Canada, they are printed by OPC, etc.

No, all cello packs say O-Pee-Chee at that part of the wrapper - not a concern.

He said that he didn't think there was anything wrong with the pack but accepted my return.

Isn't stuauto a member on these boards? That may not be his ID, but I thought he was a member.

    Thanks,

  • I bought some wax packs from him as well. Everything appeared ok, but then I cant say I know exactly whatI am looking for. An 81 basketball pack I pulled Magic Johnson card, but it was terribly off center. I cant recall anything off about the cards though.

That said, was the Thurman pack bought by the OP or the box of 78 cellos?

that is one hell of a re-seal if indeed true.

I laugh at stuff like this mostly and only because I learned LONG ago to take it in the rear and pay the piper for what you KNOW is the real deal. With all due respect, lol at buying packs like these on e-bay.

Because "he-who-must-not-be-named" is the 800lb gorilla standing in the corner in regard to resealed packs. When you think of resealed packs you think of ""he-who-must-not-be-named". Anyone see Harry or Dumbledore?

I get that. But, I just don't want this thread to go <poof> because "he-who-must-not-be-named" becomes the topic.

So did anybody on the boards buy the 1978 pack with Cecil Cooper on the back or Don Baylor on the back? I don't know who would be on top of those packs but I would be curious how the seals match up.

Wow. Brilliant detective work. What a catch. You really need to join a CSI team or something.

I still see the unnamed one posting across town. It's unbelievable.

According to the seller's scans, the George Brett on top is the Cecil Cooper/back pack.

Yup, you're right! And what's "nice" about the Cooper pack is that it's got that hole in the cello by the 2B and the Cooper card is very off-center. There is no question it's the same pack (at least the same wrapper and card on the back). Of course there's the chance that the scan pictures are mixed up. That's why I was hoping that someone on the boards might have bought the pack and can confirm.

Just to eliminate possibilities, has anyone thought of contacting the seller of the original box to ask them if there were any of these star cards on the tops of their packs when they sold it?
