Opening bids are all over the place, they make no sense.

Yeah, some of the opening bids are attractive, others not as much. Should be fun to watch though.

Suffice to say the opening bids will be a distant memory by the time the auction is closed..

Wow. High closings. The 1958 topps pack went for over 14k
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
The '53 Bowman pack almost certainly was the GAI 5 pack from Mastro in '07. I ran it to almost $9K but dropped out. The '58 pack ended up about where I thought given it's scarcity, the pack that surprised me was the '52 Bowman, which went really high considering.

I had all the SCP packs on my watch list but didn't make a real run on any of them because of my lack of knowledge regarding pre-1970s wax. I was very surprised by the 1958, not knowing anything beyond SMR. Isn't $14K+ the second-highest price ever paid for an unopened pack?

I was pretty upset when my PSA 9 1972 Topps 6th series got gum tears in it due to the holder design. Looking at how the 1957 Topps sold for about 1/3 of SMR because of the same problem, while most other packs were 2x or higher SMR, I realize it could have been a lot worse. Here's a link to the 1957. SMR of $3500. Sold for $1300. Ouch. I was tempted, but spent my money elsewhere. 1957 Topps Wax Pack

I know SMR is tits on a bull for cards but is it also tits on a bull for unopened packs? Seems like some of those packs are either unique or extremely hard to find so SMR would probably be tits on a bulls for those no matter what.
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
SMR is way, way off on most, if not all, '50's packs. Sometimes less than 25% of their real value.
There have been several packs that have sold in excess of $15k in the last 6 years, albeit in private sales. A '56 nickel pack would certainly be near $20k at this point.

amazing price on the '53 Bowman Color. I wanted it to complete a run of Bowman packs(have '52 in PSA-7, '54 and '55 in GAI slabs from many moons ago)....but dropped out after it hit over$4,000.

Never thought that it would go for over $10K. Crazy--but in 20 years of collecting unopened--this is the 1st '53 Bowman Color I have seen for auction that I can recall.

The '58-no surprise--been about 6 years since the last public auction I think.

Anthony--figured you for one or both of these !!

Was the Berk Ross a steal or is it just me? There have been only 6 graded by PSA and you can pull a Mantle or Williams out of a pack.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Berk Ross is fairly easy, and not a very popular set. Price was about right.
Manny, I"m 99% sure this is the same '53 pack from the '07 Mastro. That one had a lot of gum powder in the holder and was a GAI 5, this one is a PSA 3 but has the same folds and stains as the other one.
There was also a different '53 pack in a catalog auction about '97. It was pretty hammered as well. I already have a full run of Topps packs so wasn't in the running for the '58.

    Anthony

I do recall that GAI pack. Sure is a rare one.

Wonder who got the '58. I knew you already had one--thought you may splurge on a 2nd one !!

yes guys, it is the same pack that was in Mastro's auction in December 2007; that pack was a 5.5

here is the unclickable link (sorry!!)

    http://www.legendaryauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=77318

    Minimum Bid: $500
    Final Bid(Includes Buyers Premium): $11,596

it doesnt look quite as bad in the psa holder as its obviously sans alot of the gum dust/fragments/pieces that were present in the gai holder

wonder if whoever submitted it to psa cracked it out of the gai holder prior to submitting it to psa or if they submitted it in the gai holder?!?!

A friend of mine has a cello pack from 1958 Topps baseball. Any chance this has around the same value as the wax pack?

I've got a gai 7.5 (old school gai ie first generation flip) with Frank malzone on the front; I think I paid around $600 for it about five years ago; packcollector can speak better to this than I can because I bought it from him....Duncan, earth to Duncan, come in Duncan (or maybe I should just text him)image

  • I remember subscribing to Sports Collectors Digest in the 90's, and it seems like the vintage pack market then vs now....like night and day.

-A pack like '52 bowman was quote "easy". Easy in the sense of other 50's and 60's packs. I don't think any 50's pack was more than $2,500 or $3,000 in the early 90's. Maybe except for an extreme rarity.

You don't see many 54 or 55 bowman packs or boxes anymore...and remember how many came from the Rosen find?

$18k for a '52 Topps pack last nite in Heritage, and $3k+ for a '59. Definitely a rise in realized prices for scarcer '50's packs.
