A really really cool coin

It it just one of those coins I didn't know how or what to bid and I ended up losing it by 10$. I would have gladly pay the extra money but it is not to be this time. That said how cool is this!

Something you don't see every day

Could you post a pic of what this coin would look like without a counterstamp?

Just to get an idea of what I'm looking at... Thanks image

    Outstanding. THAT is cool.

But why would a 1 reale struck in 1816 be on a planchet like a cob from at least 100 years earlier?
My wag is there was some extensive post mint damage done to that piece.

In 1816 Costa Rica was not quite committed to joining the confederation of Central American countries pushing for Independence from their status as colonies under Spain's rule. This Costa Rican legend may have been deliberately added to show unity in or around 1816 with Central America on this Spanish cob to deliver a message to the vice-royalty of Spain. Costa Rica eventually joined the confederation of Central American provinces in 1823.

I do. Normally, I would want one with more visible undertype detail, but the crude shape makes this one especially charming.

BTW, these coins are not rare, so those of you that like it should keep your eyes open. There will be more opportunities.

One more thing. The date is 1846, not 1816.
