Did it actually sell on eBay or was it simply used for marketing:

I wonder what the shipping will be... FedEx over night or... Personal deliveryimage

Using a calculator with his Top Rated seller status I come up with: $58,750 in Ebay fees and $106,423 in Paypal feesimage

Forget the PayPal fees. Not handled via PayPal. Seller should have have waited until 5/1...his FVF would have been only $200 ...

Let's not forget Uncle Sam's 28% take. (if owned longer than 1 year, am I correct?) 18% otherwise.

Collectibles are taxed at short term cap gains rates regardless of the holding period.

Perhaps ticked off with the other venues of selling?

Hope that's true! I had an IRS lady while explaining how to file my taxes for self-employment but she said, 28% for the coins I've sold which has been stuck in my head ever since. That was last year and I still haven't filed but am making quarterly payments.

28% is correct, irregardless of the holding period. There is no such thing as long term capital gains on collectibles.

Wish it were different, but it's not.

Well, here's a 'how to' article that gives more detail.

I don't agree with the gov's reasoning...people need all the money they can get their hands on to buy those expensive houses.

i didn't read the whole thread but for those wondering the cap on auction sales and bin/obo sales are far from the same on higher-dollar items

Seems to me the publicity is worth enough to eBay that the seller could have easily negotiated a near-zero (or zero) commission on this deal. And Steve is not one to miss an opportunity like that.
